Merrill W. Harris
Merrill W. Harris (May 10, 1894 – May 3, 1967), was a Vermont businessman and politician who served as President pro tempore of the Vermont State Senate, President of the Vermont State Senate. Biography Merrill Wallace Harris was born in Montpelier, Vermont on May 10, 1894. He was educated in Montpelier, and graduated from Montpelier High School (Vermont), Montpelier High School in 1912. Harris enlisted for World War I in May 1917. He served in Company H, 1st Vermont Infantry, which was federalized as Company F, 101st Ammunition Train, a unit of the 26th Infantry Division (United States), 26th Division. Joining the Army at Fort Ethan Allen in Colchester, Vermont, Harris served in France and attained the rank of Corporal (United States), Corporal before being discharged at Fort Devens, Massachusetts in April 1919. Vermont State Senate
The Vermont Senate is the upper house of the Vermont General Assembly, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Vermont. The senate consists of 30 members. Senate districting divides the 30 members into three single-member districts, six two-member districts, three three-member districts, and one six-member district. Each senator represents at least 20,300 citizens. Senators are elected to two-year terms and there is no limit to the number of terms that a senator may serve. As in other upper houses of state and territorial legislatures and the U.S. Senate, the state senate of Vermont has special functions, such as confirming or rejecting gubernatorial appointments to executive departments, the state cabinet, commissions, and boards, as well as electing members to the Vermont Supreme Court. The Vermont Republican Party is the affiliate of the Republican Party in Vermont and has been active since its foundation in the 1860s. The party is the second largest in the state behind the Vermont Democratic Party, but ahead of the Vermont Progressive Party. Fort Devens, Massachusetts
Fort Devens is a United States Army Reserve military installation in the towns of Ayer and Shirley, in Middlesex County and Harvard in Worcester County in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. Due to extensive environmental contamination it was listed as a superfund site in 1989. Although closed in 1996, it was reopened the next day as the Devens Reserve Forces Training Area, located in Lancaster. The name reverted to Fort Devens in May 2007. In 2011, the fort had a population of 306 enlisted personnel, 2,151 reservists, 348 civilians, and 1,399 family members, and maintained 25 ranges, 21 training areas, and 15 maneuver areas on nearly of land.
