Merrill Singer
Merrill Singer (b. October 6, 1950 McKeesport, PA, USA) is a medical anthropologist and professor emeritus in Anthropology at The University of Connecticut and in Community Medicine at The University of Connecticut Health Center. He is best known for his research on substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, syndemics, health disparities, and minority health. Background Singer studied anthropology at California State University, Northridge (Master of Arts, Anthropology, 1975) and completed a PhD in Anthropology at the University of Utah in 1979. He held a National Institute of Alcohol and Alcohol Abuse Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry, George Washington University (1979–80) and another at the University of Connecticut Medical School from 1982 to 1983. McKeesport, PA
McKeesport is a city in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is situated at the confluence of the Monongahela and Youghiogheny rivers and within the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The population was 17,727 as of the 2020 census. It is Allegheny County's second biggest city after Pittsburgh. History Early history David McKee emigrated from Scotland and was the first permanent white settler at the forks of the Monongahela and Youghiogheny Rivers, the site of present-day McKeesport, in 1755. Paul Edward Farmer (October 26, 1959 – February 21, 2022) was an American medical anthropology, medical anthropologist and physician. Farmer held an MD and PhD from Harvard University, where he was a Harvard University Professor, University Professor and the chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
