Merome Beard is an Australian politician, representing the electoral district of North West Central in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly for the National Party since 17 September 2022. Early life and career Beard is a great-great-granddaughter of Sir Thomas Cockburn-Campbell, the first president of the Western Australian Legislative Council in 1890. She competed as a rower at the Australian Institute of Sport and went to the 1994 World Championships. Beard and her husband have owned and ran the Port Hotel in Carnarvon for over twenty years. Political career In late June 2022, Beard was selected by the National Party to contest the 2022 North West Central state by-election for them, after incumbent member Vince Catania announced his plans to retire. A by-election for the electoral district of North West Central in Western Australia took place on 17 September 2022 following the resignation of the sitting member, Nationals MP Vince Catania, on 8 August 2022. The election was won by National Party candidate Merome Beard. Background Vince Catania was initially elected to the electoral district of North West Central in 2008 as a Labor Party candidate, but he defected to the National Party in 2009. He had since won the 2013, 2017 and 2021 state elections as a National Party candidate. His margin at the 2021 election was only 259 votes, making it one of the closest seats in the state. North West Central is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district is mostly based in the rural north-west of Western Australia. It is currently a marginal seat for the Nationals. History First known as North West Coastal, the district was first created for the 2005 state election, incorporating territory from the abolished districts of Burrup and Ningaloo. The seat was won by Labor MP, and then member for Burrup, Fred Riebeling. The district was expanded for the 2008 state election, incorporating more inland territory which resulted in the name change to North West. It is regarded as a house of review for legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly, the lower house. The two Houses of Parliament sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Perth. Effective on 20 May 2005, for the election of members of the Legislative Council, the State was divided into 6 electoral regions by community of interest —3 metropolitan and 3 rural—each electing 6 members to the Legislative Council..
