Mermaid Beach is a coastal suburb on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. In the , Mermaid Beach had a population of 6,533. Nobby Beach is a neighbourhood in the south of the suburb (). Geography The suburb is bounded to the west by the artificial canals of adjacent Mermaid Waters and to the east by the Pacific Ocean. To the north is the suburb of Broadbeach, to the south Miami. The Gold Coast Highway passes through Mermaid Beach. The Gold Coast Oceanway (a pedestrian path) travels along Hedges Avenue. History Mermaid Beach receives its name from the cutter HMS ''Mermaid''. Explorer John Oxley sailed aboard the ''Mermaid'' in 1823 when he discovered the nearby Tweed and Brisbane rivers. Mermaid Beach was used during World War II by US servicemen, and was named Los Angeles Beach as well as Miami Beach to the south. There are eighty-one suburbs in the City of Gold Coast, a local government area in Queensland, Australia. The local government area has been amended several times since its creation in 1948, most dramatically by its amalgamation in 1994 with the Shire of Albert, and losing a section centred on Beenleigh north of the Albert River to Logan City in March 2008. Fifty-two are gazetted as suburbs and twenty-nine as localities. Many suburbs have been established on reclaimed land including saltmarshes, mangroves and tidal flats. John Oxley
John Joseph William Molesworth Oxley (1784 – 25 May 1828) was an explorer and surveyor of Australia in the early period of British colonisation. He served as Surveyor General of New South Wales and is perhaps best known for his two expeditions into the interior of New South Wales and his exploration of the Tweed River and the Brisbane River in what is now the state of Queensland. Early life John Oxley was born at Kirkham Abbey near Westow in Yorkshire, Great Britain. He was baptised at Bulmer on 6 July 1784, his parents recorded as John and Arabella Oxley. HMS Mermaid (1817)
HMS ''Mermaid'' was a cutter built in Howrah, India, in 1816. The British Royal Navy purchased her at Port Jackson in 1817. The Navy then used her to survey the Australian coasts. In 1820 she grounded and in 1823 was condemned for survey work. The Navy sold her to the colonial government which used her to run errands until she was wrecked in 1829. Career ''Mermaid'' was launched at Howrah in 1816 and the Royal Navy purchased her at Port Jackson in 1817. Phillip Parker King used her between December 1817 and December 1820 to survey parts of the Australian coast that Matthew Flinders had not already surveyed.
