Merle Thorpe Jr.
Merle Thorpe, Jr. (1918-Feb. 13, 1994) was an American lawyer and philanthropist. Thorpe was born in Washington DC and attended Sidwell Friends, St. Albans School and the Phillips Exeter Academy. He then earned bachelor's and law degrees from Yale University. Thorpe served as a Navy intelligence officer during World War II. After the war Thorpe joined the Washington DC law firm Hogan & Hartson Hogan Lovells is an American-British law firm co-headquartered in London and Washington, DC. The firm was formed in 2010 by the merger of the American law firm Hogan & Hartson and the British law firm Lovells. It employs about 2,400 lawyers acr ..., where he was a partner from 1956 to 1982. Thorpe led a number of early shareholder's rights battles. Sidwell Friends School is a Quaker school located in Bethesda, Maryland and Washington, D.C., offering pre-kindergarten through high school classes. Founded in 1883 by Thomas W. James William Fulbright (April 9, 1905 – February 9, 1995) was an American politician, academic, and statesman who represented Arkansas in the United States Senate from 1945 until his resignation in 1974. , Fulbright is the longest serving chairman in the history of the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
