Merle Norman Stadium
Merle Norman Stadium is a beach volleyball facility located in Los Angeles, California, United States. The on-campus USC facility, built in 2013, serves as the home of the USC Trojans women's beach volleyball team. The facility has three sand courts where USC plays its home matches and holds practices. History Ground was broken to construct the venue in July 2012 from donations of several USC alumni, including Jack and Helen Nethercutt. The stadium opened on March 7, 2013, and was named after Merle Norman. The Trojans went undefeated at the stadium in 2014, 2015, and 2017. As of July 2020, the Trojans are 34–4 at the stadium. Events The women's beach volleyball team played their first dual match in the stadium on March 10, 2013, versus Loyola Marymount. The 2016 Pac-12 Conference beach volleyball championships were held at the stadium, which the USC Trojans won. The Loyola Marymount Lions are the athletic teams that represent Loyola Marymount University, a Jesuit institution in Los Angeles, California. Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules. It has been a part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since Tokyo 1964. Beach volleyball was introduced to the programme at the Atlanta 1996. The Galen Center is a multipurpose indoor arena and athletic facility owned and operated by the University of Southern California. Merle Nethercutt Norman
Merle Nethercutt Norman (January 15, 1887 – January 1, 1972) was an American cosmetics magnate, chemist, and philanthropist. She was the founder of Merle Norman Cosmetics and was one of the early business pioneers of franchising. Early life and education Merle Mozelle Nethercutt was born in Logansport, Indiana, the first born to Melvin and Emma Nethercutt. Her family later moved to South Bend, Indiana where she graduated high school. In high school she was a public speaker and musician. She attended a teachers' college and taught in the South Bend school system for several years. Nethercutt later enrolled in the University of Chicago to study chemistry. In 1912 she met Andrew Norman Gullickstead who was an advertiser and would change her name to Merle Norman. They both would move to Santa Monica, California in 1920. Her nephew, J.B. Helen Nethercutt
Helen Richards-Nethercutt (born September 12, 1952) is an American businesswoman and autism philanthropist. Career Helen Wilkins was born in 1952 in Buckingham, Illinois and graduated from Herscher High School in 1969. She married U.S. Army specialist John Richards and adopted the name Helen Richards. They had two children, Travis and an autistic son Trent. In 1980 she had a divorce and moved to Las Vegas, where she worked at a grocery store and would meet Jack Nethercutt II whom she later married. The couple operated a luxury restaurant named Boison's near the Las Vegas Strip, which won a LVRJ Best of Las Vegas award.
