Merle Hay
Merle David Hay (July 20, 1896 – November 3, 1917) was the first Iowa serviceman and perhaps the first American serviceman to die in World War I, along with Corporal James Bethel Gresham of Evansville, Indiana and Thomas Enright of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Early life Merle Hay was born on a Carroll County, Iowa farm to Harvey and Carrie Hay. He was the oldest of 3 children. In 1909, the family moved to another farm near Glidden. Before his service with the United States Army, he was a farm implement mechanic. World War I service When the United States entered the First World War, Hay was young enough to avoid being drafted. With his father's blessing, he voluntarily enlisted on May 9, 1917. He was among eight men from Glidden who enlisted that day. Jules-André Peugeot (; June 11, 1893 – August 2, 1914) was the first French soldier to die in World War I. He died one day before war was formally declared on France by Germany, in the same skirmish in which Albert Mayer became the first German soldier to die. Early life Before being called up for compulsory military service in 1913, Jules Andre Peugeot was a teacher. Death On mid morning on August 2, 1914, a German cavalry patrol led by ''Leutnant'' Albert Mayer patrolled into France before war had been officially declared. Upon crossing into French territory, Mayer slashed a French sentry with his saber before going deeper into France. Albert Mayer (24 April 18922 August 1914) was the first German soldier to die in World War I. He died one day before the German Empire formally declared war on France. Early life Albert Otto Walter Mayer was born on 24 April 1892 at Magdeburg, in Saxony-Anhalt. His family had moved to the area of Mulhouse, Alsace when he was a boy. He enlisted into the Imperial German Army in 1912. In August 1914, he was a lieutenant in his local cavalry unit, the Jäger Regt-zu-Pferd Nr 5, which was part of the 29th Cavalry Brigade of the 29th Infantry Division, garrisoned in Mulhouse. Merle Hay Mall
Merle Hay Mall is an enclosed super-regional shopping mall in Des Moines, Iowa, in the United States. Opened in 1959, it is the oldest regional shopping center in Iowa, and was the largest mall in Iowa in terms of gross leasable area before the 2004 opening of Jordan Creek Town Center in neighboring West Des Moines. It was also the site of the deadliest fire in Des Moines' history, which killed eleven people in 1978. The mall's anchor stores are Kohl's, Target and Ross Dress for Less.
