Carole Merle
Carole Merle (; born 24 January 1964) is a former France, French Alpine skiing, Alpine skier. A specialist of Giant Slalom and Super-G, she won 22 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, World Cup races, 6 World Cup season titles and 1 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, World Championship gold medal. Skiing career A native of , a ski resort of Enchastrayes commune where her parents ran a hotel, Merle learned to ski at a very young age. She took part in her first competition as a six-year-old, and made her World Cup debut at 18. On 23 January 1983, she took her first World Cup podium with a third-place finish in Giant Slalom at Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, St. Gervais. Foulques Du Merle
Foulques or Foucaud du Merle (died 1314) was a Marshal of France, Seigneur of Gacé and Bellou-en-Houlme, and Baron of Le Merlerault, Briouze and Messei. Du Merle was the son of Guillaume VI du Merle and Marie de Nollent. He served Philip III and Philip IV as a knight banneret. In 1302 he was made Marshal of France by Philip IV following the deaths of Simon de Melun and Guy I of Clermont at the Battle of the Golden Spurs, in which du Merle had also fought. In June 1303 du Merle led a force of 1,400 soldiers to bolster the defenders of Tournai. He fought alongside the king at the Battle of Mons-en-Pévèle in 1304 and following the battle negotiated for France with Philip of Chieti. Frank Merle (mathematician)
Frank Merle (born 22 November 1962, in Marseille) is a French mathematician, specializing in partial differential equations and mathematical physics. Education and career After graduation from the École normale supérieure (ENS), Merle received in 1987 his Ph.D. from the University of Paris VI under Henri Berestycki with thesis ''Contributions a l'etude de certaines equations aux derivees partielles non lineaires de la physique mathematique''. He became a researcher for CNRS at ENS. In 1989/90 he was an assistant professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of the University of New York. Since 1991 Merle has been a professor at the University of Cergy-Pontoise. From 1998 to 2003 he was a member of the Institut Universitaire de France. Guy Du Merle
Guy du Merle (1 January 1908 – 6 June 1993) was a French aeronautical engineer, test pilot and writer. He was the first director-general of the ''École nationale de l'aviation civile'' (French civil aviation university). Biography Du Merle was born in Toulon. A graduate from the ''École polytechnique'' (X 27) and the ''École nationale supérieure de l'aéronautique et de l'espace'' (Supaéro 32), he began his career as an air military engineer in the military air center from 1933 to 1935 and test pilot on more than hundred types of aircraft, seaplanes and gliders, including, with Captain Rozanoff, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and the Heinkel He 111 captured by the Republicans in Spain in 1938. Hugues Merle
Hugues Merle (1822–1881) was a French painter who mostly depicted sentimental or moral subjects. He has often been compared with William-Adolphe Bouguereau. Biography Hugues Merle was born in 1822 in La Sône. He studied painting with Léon Cogniet. Merle started exhibiting at the Salon (Paris) in 1847. He received second class prizes in 1861 and 1863. In 1866 he was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. Hugues Merle became a friend of Paul Durand-Ruel in the early 1860s. Durand-Ruel had started buying paintings by Merle in 1862 and introduced the artist to painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau. Merle was later often compared to Bouguereau and “became a considerable rival of Bouguereau in subject and treatment”. In the mid-1860s, Merle painted several portraits of Paul Durand-Ruel, his wife, and their son, John. Hugues Merle died in 1881 in Paris. His son Georges Merle also became a painter. Mathieu Merle (c.1548 in Uzès – after 1587) was a Huguenot captain who sowed terror in the south of the Auvergne, Gévaudan and Velay during the Wars of Religion. Captain Merle is an example of the possibilities of social climbing and enrichment offered by the religious troubles. Biography He was one of three sons of Antoine Merle, an ennobled merchant from Uzès, and Marguerite de Virgilli. He was married on 20 October 1576 at the sovereign castle (''château souverain'' or Castelsoubro) of Roffiac, to Françoise d'Auzolles, daughter of Guillot d'Auzolles, seigneur of Serre and Françoise de La Rochette. Olivier Merle (born 14 November 1965 in Chamalières, Puy-de-Dôme) is a former French rugby union footballer. He played as a lock. He was known by several nicknames, including "La Merluche" and "Le Massif Central". He was known for his violent play and after headbutting Ricky Evans the Welsh prop in Paris causing a ruck to collapse on him breaking his ankle, resulted in his being sued successfully in the courts for damages. Pierre Hugues Victoire Merle
Pierre Hugues Victoire Merle (26 August 1766 – 5 December 1830) was a French general during the First French Empire of Napoleon. He joined the French army as a private in 1781 but after the French Revolution, the pace of promotion quickened. He was appointed a general officer in 1794 for distinguishing himself during the War of the Pyrenees. After leading a brigade at Austerlitz in December 1805, he was promoted again. His division was in the first wave of the 1808 invasion of Spain, which precipitated the Peninsular War. In Spain, he led his division at Medina de Rioseco, Corunna, First and Second Porto, Bussaco, Sabugal, and Fuentes de Oñoro. After being sent home from Spain, Merle was assigned to lead a division in the French invasion of Russia. He led his troops at First and Second Polotsk.
