Benjamin Dean Meritt (March 31, 1899 in Durham, North Carolina – July 7, 1989 in Austin, Texas) was a classical scholar, professor and epigraphist of ancient Greece. His father was a professor of Greek and Latin at Trinity College (later Duke University). Lucy Taxis Shoe Meritt (August 7, 1906, in Camden, New Jersey – Austin, Texas, April 13, 2003) was a classical archaeologist and a scholar of Greek architectural ornamentation and mouldings. Biography Born in Camden, New Jersey, Lucy Shoe Meritt was the daughter of William Napoleon Shoe and Mary Esther Dunning Shoe. She studied at Bryn Mawr College (A.B. 1927, M.A. 1928, Ph.D. 1935). She continued her studies at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens from 1929 to 1934. From 1937 to 1950 Meritt taught at Mount Holyoke College. She was twice a fellow of the American Academy in Rome (1937 and 1950). She married Benjamin Dean Meritt at Princeton, New Jersey, on November 2, 1964. She worked at the Roman site of Cosa and at Serra Orlando (Morgantina) in Sicily. She served as editor of publications for the American School of Classical Studies in Athens from 1950 until 1972. Paul Meritt
Paul John Meritt (originally Paul John Maetzker; 1843/4 – 7 July 1895) was a British dramatist and theatre manager, producing many sensational dramas. Life Meritt was born in Kyiv, to British parents; his father, originally from Prague, was naturalized British, and was at one time private secretary to Sir Edward Earle Gascoyne Bulwer. After his father died in 1854, he attended school in Leeds, and was later was an office clerk; from 1868 he was a clerk in London. From the early 1870s he wrote professionally, creating sensational melodramas which were performed at the Royal Grecian Theatre in Shoreditch. In the early 1880s, Meritt and George Augustus Conquest jointly operated the Surrey Theatre, and wrote plays together. His plays brought him success, and made money. Meritt was a member of the Savage Club and the Dramatic Authors' Society, and he was a friend of leading figures in the theatrical world. Meritt Records (1925)
Meritt Records was a jazz and blues record company and label that existed from 1925 to 1929. It was founded in Kansas City by Winston Holmes, the owner of a music store. Records were made in his studio and sold only in his store. Holmes produced about 20 double-sided acoustically recorded phonograph records in the mid and late 1920s. Most of the sides are of locally based jazz and blues performers, plus some gospel music and sermons. Meritt Records (1979)
Meritt Records was a jazz record label started by Jerry Valburn in 1979. It made limited-edition reissues of early jazz that could be bought only through mail-order by members of the Meritt Record Society. Valburn also issued the Duke Ellington Treasury Series. These were recordings of radio broadcasts Ellington made for the U.S. Treasury Department in 1945–1946. Merritt (formerly, Meritt) is an unincorporated community in Yolo County, California California is a state in the Western United States, located along the Pacific Coast. With nearly 39.2million residents across a total area of approximately , it is the most populous U.S. state and the 3rd largest by area. It is also the m .... It lies at an elevation of 56 feet (17 m). The post office for the area was established in 1859 as "Meritt", and discontinued in 1860. It was reestablished and ran between 1870 and 1873 as "Merritt". It was named after Hiram P. Merritt who came to Yolo County before 1866. In the late 19th century, Merritt was a shipment point on the railroad for cattle to market. A 1913 book described Merritt, along with Mullen, as farming towns along the main automobile route from Davis to Woodland.
