The Mergellandroute ("marl land route") is a tourist route through South Limburg (Netherlands), South Limburg, Netherlands, mapped out by the ANWB. The Mergellandroute goes mostly through the local hills, which are in contrast with the lesser relief found in the rest of the Netherlands. The route has a length of 110 kilometers by car and motorcycle or 136.9 kilometers by bicycle, bike. Route The route for motorised vehicles ( roadsigns) passes through the following towns. Mheer
Mheer (; li, Maer) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Eijsden-Margraten and about 12 km southeast of Maastricht. History The village was first mentioned in the 1170s as de Mere, and means lake. Mheer developed in the Middle Ages on the plateau of Margraten. A castle was built on the highest point belong to the Land of Dalhem. The village became a '' heerlijkheid'' in 1564. Meer Castle was first mentioned in 1314. The oldest parts date from the early-14th century. The current complex was finished by 1570. In 1914, an extensive remodelling was planned, but was only partially executed between 1918 and 1923. The park was laid out in 1852. The Catholic St Lambertus is a single aisled church with needle spire. Huls, Netherlands
Huls ( Limburgish: ''De Huls'') is a hamlet in the southeastern Netherlands. It is part of the municipality of Simpelveld in the province of Limburg, about 20 km east of Maastricht. The village lies on a hill, north of Simpelveld, and south of Ubachsberg. In 2008 the village had a population of 350 on an area of 0.44 km2. On the hillside south of Huls lies Hulsveld, a hamlet sharing the same name with a population of 1630. Simpelveld
Simpelveld (; li, Zumpelveld ) is a municipality and a town in the southeastern Netherlands. It is part of the municipal cooperative unit Parkstad Limburg. Simpelveld is part of the ''Mergelland'', named after the presence of chalk (mergel), hill country popular with tourists. The Mergellandroute passes through the town. Wittem
Wittem (, ) is a small village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Gulpen-Wittem. History The village was first mentioned in 1125 as Witham, and means "means silted land in a bend in a waterway". Wittem developed in the Early Middle Ages. In the 13th century, a castle was built near the confluence of the Selzerbeek with the Geul. It used to be a free ''heerlijkheid'' (=no fief), but was bought by Ferdinand Adolph von Plettenberg in 1722 and elevated to barony in 1732. Wittem Castle is surrounded by two moats. Mechelen, Netherlands
Mechelen (; li, Mechele ) is a town in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is a part of the municipality of Gulpen-Wittem, and lies about 13 km south of Heerlen. History The village was first mentioned in 1133 as "de Mechluns", and means "mighty place". It was sometimes called Klein-Mechelen (little Mechelen) to distinguish from Mechelen. Mechelen developed around a large farm which was donated to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta by Henry III, Duke of Limburg. Vijlen
Vijlen ( li, Viele) is a village in the South-East part of the Dutch province of Limburg. The village is constituted of a number of hamlets, among which Mamelis, Camerig, Harles and Cottessen.
