Mercer Street Historic District
Mercer Street Historic District is a national historic district located at Princeton, Mercer County, West Virginia. The district includes 28 contributing buildings in the central business district of Princeton. The buildings are primarily two and three-story, masonry commercial buildings with storefronts on the first floor and housing in the upper stories. Almost all of the buildings date from the opening of the Virginian Railway in 1908 and 1909. Notable buildings include the Old Stag Clothing Store, Mercer County Schools Warehouse (c. 1930), Cleaners and Laundry Building (c. 1915), Sively Company Building (1913), Mullins Brothers Building (1912), and D&D Saddle and Tack Building (c. 1915). Princeton, is a city in and the county seat of Mercer County, West Virginia, United States. The city is coined the "Heart of Mercer County" or the "Jewel of the South" in past decades. The population was 6,432 at the 2010 census with approximately 35,000 residents living in the greater Princeton area. Mercer County is a county on the southeastern border of the U.S. state of West Virginia. At the 2020 census, the population was 59,664. Its county seat is Princeton. The county was originally established in the State of Virginia by act of its General Assembly on March 17, 1837, (WV County Etymology) using lands taken from Giles and Tazewell counties.
