Merak ( dz, མེ་རག་, me rag, size=150%) is a settlement and the headquarters of an eponymous gewog in the far east of Bhutan. Merak is part of the Mera-Sakteng subdistrict (dungkhag) in the Trashigang District. The people are widely known as ''Brokpa'', meaning 'highlander'. The main activities of these highlanders are raising of the domestic animals. Until 2012, Merak could only be reached by a two-day hike. In 2012 a new road was constructed that shortened the hike to one day. Merag Gewog ( dz, མེ་རག་, me rag, size=150%) is a gewog (village block) of Trashigang District, Bhutan. Merak and Sakten Gewogs comprise Sakten Dungkhag A dungkhag ( dz, དྲུང་ཁག་ ''drungkhak'') is a sub-district of a dzongkhag (district) of Bhutan. The head of a dungkhag is a ''Dungpa''. Trashigang District
Trashigang District ( Dzongkha: བཀྲ་ཤིས་སྒང་རྫོང་ཁག་; Wylie: ''Bkra-shis-sgang rdzong-khag''; also spelled "Tashigang") is Bhutan's easternmost dzongkhag (district). Culture The population of the district is mainly Sharchop, which means "easterner" in Dzongkha, the national language. Languages The dominant language of Trashigang is Tshangla (Sharchopkha), the ''lingua franca'' of eastern Bhutan. Two significant minority languages are spoken in the far eastern region of the district: the East Bodish Dakpa language and the Southern Bodish Brokpa language. Dakpa is spoken by descendants of yakherding communities, and may in fact be a divergent dialect of Brokpake, heavily influenced by Dzalakha. Brokpa
The Brokpa (), sometimes referred to as Minaro, are a small ethnic group mostly found in the union territory of Ladakh, India around the villages of Dha and Hanu. Some of the community are also located across the Line of Control in Baltistan, in the villages around Ganokh. They speak an Indo-Aryan language called Brokskat. The Brokpa are mostly Vajrayana Buddhist while some are Muslim. A small percentage also follow Hinduism. Name According to the British Raj commentators, the name 'Brogpa' was given by the Baltis to the Dardic people living among them. The term means "highlander". The reason for this is that the Brogpa tended to occupy the higher pasture lands in the valleys. In western popular culture, the creature is commonly referred to as the Abominable Snowman.
