Mephistopheles (, ), also known as Mephisto, is a demon featured in German folklore. He originally appeared in literature as the demon in the Faust legend, and he has since appeared in other works as a stock character (see: Mephistopheles in the arts and popular culture). Etymology and name meaning The name ''Mephistopheles'' is a corrupted Greek compound. The Greek particle of negation (μη, ''mē'') and the Greek word for love or loving (φίλος, ''philos'') are the first and last terms of the compound but the middle term is more doubtful. Mephisto is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character first appears in ''The Silver Surfer'' #3 (December 1968), created by Stan Lee and John Buscema and based on Mephistopheles – a demon character from the Faust legend, who has sometimes been referred to as Mephisto. ''The Black Halo'' is the highly acclaimed, seventh full-length album by the American power metal band Kamelot. It was released on March 15, 2005, through Steamhammer Records. It is a concept album inspired by Goethe's Faust. Continuing the story introduced in ''Epica'' (2003), it is the second and final record in Kamelot's two-part rock opera about Ariel (a character based on Heinrich Faust). Epica tells Part 1 while The Black Halo tells Part 2. Goethe's Faust is also broken into two parts. Mefisto is a Swedish extreme metal band formed in Stockholm in 1984. History After changing its name from ''Torment'', Mefisto was one of the first Swedish extreme bands to follow Bathory. They had a big influence on early Swedish death metal, along with Obscurity as well as Merciless shortly thereafter. Mefisto originally consisted of three members: guitarist Omar Ahmed, drummer Robert "Thord" Granath, and singer Sandro Cajander. Cajander, who later joined Morbid, had a deep, harsh vocal style comparable to but more extreme than peers Bathory or Venom, which was developed further by LG Petrov of Nihilist (later Entombed).
