John Menzies plc ( , ) is the holding company of Menzies Aviation plc, an aviation services business providing ground handling, cargo handling, cargo forwarding and into-plane (ITP) fuelling, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. History The company was founded by a bookseller, John Menzies, with his first shop in Princes Street, Edinburgh, in 1833. In 1941, the company's branch in Greenock was destroyed in the Greenock Blitz. In January 1998, the company closed its principal branch in Edinburgh, although the head office continued to occupy the building. The whole retail operation was sold to WH Smith in May 1998, to enable Menzies to concentrate on its distribution business. The Division of Menzies is an Australian Electoral Division in the state of Victoria. History The Division was proclaimed at the redistribution of 14 September 1984, and was first contested at the 1984 election. The division replaced the eastern half of the abolished Division of Diamond Valley, with the western half becoming the Division of Jagajaga. The division was named after Sir Robert Menzies, the longest serving Prime Minister of Australia. The Division had always been a safe Liberal seat until the 2022 Australian federal election. It was first held by Neil Brown, a former minister who served in the Fraser Government and who also served as deputy Liberal leader under John Howard from 1985 to 1987. Brown retired in 1991 and was replaced by Kevin Andrews, who held the seat from 1991 to 2022. Menzies is a suburb in the City of Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia. In the , Menzies had a population of 985 people. Geography The Leichhard River flows north–south through the town of Mount Isa, dividing the suburbs of the town into "mineside" (west of the Leichhardt River) and "townside" (east of the Leichhardt River). Menzies is a "townside" suburb. History Menzies was named by the Queensland Place Names Board on 1 September 1973. On 16 March 2001 the status of Menzies was changed from a locality to a suburb. St Kieran's Christian Brothers College opened on 25 January 1960 with an initial enrolment of 132 boys in Years 4 to 7 with Brother Tom Higgins as the first principal. By 1967 the school had an enrolment of over 300 boys in Years 4 to 10. Menzies is a town in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, east-northeast of the state capital, Perth, and north-northwest of the city of Kalgoorlie. At the 2016 census, Menzies had a population of 108. Aboriginal people have lived in this area since time immemorial, and the local group are the Kaburn Bardu. History Gold was discovered in the area in 1894, and Leslie Robert Menzies, a Canadian-born prospector, and John McDonald were the first to take up a lease here in October 1894, naming it the "Lady Shenton". It was a rich gold find, and the Mining Warden for the area recommended a townsite be declared in 1895, named in Menzies' honour. The townsite was gazetted in August 1895. Land around the town was sold in 1895 and by 1896 it had become a municipality. A railway line was constructed from Kalgoorlie to Menzies and opened on 22 March 1898. The Shire of Menzies is a local government area in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia located to the north of Kalgoorlie. It covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Menzies. History The Shire of Menzies originated as the Menzies Road District, which was established on 31 May 1912 after the subdivision of the North Coolgardie Road District into three separate road districts (Menzies, Kookynie and Mt Malcolm). The North Coolgardie Road District had absorbed three municipalities on 1 March 1912, including the Municipality of Menzies covering the Menzies township, but had quickly proven too large and cumbersome to administer and was broken up. The Kookynie Road District merged into the Menzies Road District in mid-1918. Menzies Bay is a large bay adjoining Seymour Narrows and Quadra Island north of Campbell River on Vancouver Island. It was once considered in 1872 as a crossing point to Vancouver Island for the Canadian Pacific Railway from Sonora Island and Bute Inlet in that project's quest for a transcontinental line. The bay was the site of a Bloedel, Stewart and Welch railroad logging camp in the 1930s, and adjacent to Ripple Rock. Background There is a private campsite on the beach. Mount Menzies is the culminating peak (3,355 m; 11,007 ft) on the large massif between Mount Mather and Mount Bayliss, standing on the south side of Fisher Glacier, Antarctica. It was sighted by Flying Officer J. Seaton from an ANARE Beaver aircraft in 1956, and mapped by an ANARE southern seismic party under K.B. Mather in 1957–58. Mount Menzies was named by ANCA after the Rt. Hon. Robert Menzies, Prime Minister of Australia, 1939–41 and 1949–66.
