Mentoclaenodon
''Mentoclaenodon'' is an extinct genus of arctocyonid ungulate mammals. ''Mentoclaenodon'' had large upper canines comparable to the "saber-teeth" of various Miocene and Pleistocene feliform saber-toothed cats. This genus and its sister-genus '' Anacodon'', and the oxyaenid ''Machaeroides ''were the first true mammals to develop saber-teeth. (The various saber-tooth gorgonopsian genera, such as ''Inostrancevia'' and '' Ruhuhucerberus'', are regarded as "stem-mammals" that are close relatives of true mammals). Fossils of ''Mentoclaenodon'' are found in late Paleocene-aged strata of Cernay, France, and in strata of Walbeck, Germany. The average estimated skull length is 15 cm. ''Mentoclaenodon'' is one of the largest European mammals during the Paleocene. Arctocyonidae (from Greek ''arktos'' ''kyôn'', "bear/dog-like") has been defined as an extinct family of unspecialized, primitive mammals with more than 20 genera. Animals assigned to this family were most abundant during the Paleocene, but extant from the late Cretaceous to the early Eocene (). Like most early mammals, their actual relationships are very difficult to resolve. No Paleocene fossil has been unambiguously assigned to any living order of placental mammals, and many genera resemble each other: generalized robust, not very agile animals with long tails and all-purpose chewing teeth, living in warm closed-canopy forests with many niches left vacant by the K-T extinction. Mesonychia ("middle claws") is an extinct taxon of small- to large-sized carnivorous ungulates related to artiodactyls. Mesonychids first appeared in the early Paleocene, went into a sharp decline at the end of the Eocene, and died out entirely when the last genus, ''Mongolestes'', became extinct in the early Oligocene.
