The district and municipality Menteşe was created at the 2013 Turkish local government reorganisation from the former central district of Muğla. Menteşe (beylik), Menteşe was the name of a 14th-century beylik in and around Muğla Province. The Provinces of Turkey, 81 provinces of Turkey are divided into 973 districts (''ilçeler''; sing. ''ilçe'').
