Menow
Menow (1935–1964) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse. He won several important races in 1937, when he was voted American Champion Two-Year-Old Male Horse. Background Bred and raced by Hal Price Headley, Menow was foaled on May 19, late in the year for a Thoroughbred racehorse. His dam was Headley's Alcibiades, who was the U.S. Champion two-year-old filly of 1929 and the Champion three-year-old filly of 1930. Menow's English-born sire, Pharamond, was owned and raced by Lord Derby, who sold him in 1928 to an American syndicate led by Hal Price Headley. He was registered in the United States as Pharamond II. Headley brought him to stand at stud at his Beaumont Farm in Lexington Kentucky. He was trained by Hal Price Headley's nephew, Duval. Pharamond II
Pharamond (1925–1952) was an English Thoroughbred racehorse who became a successful sire of Champions in the United States where he was registered as Pharamond II. He was a full brother to Sickle, who also stood at stud successfully in the United States. Pharamond was bred and raced by Edward Stanley, 17th Earl of Derby. His sire was Phalaris, twice the Leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland and a three-time Leading broodmare sire in Great Britain & Ireland. His dam was Selene who also produced the Argentine and leading Brazilian sire Hunter's Moon and Hyperion, the 1933 Epsom Derby and St. Leger Stakes winner and a six-time Leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland as well as a four-time Leading broodmare sire in Great Britain and Ireland. Withers Stakes
The Withers Stakes is a Graded stakes race, Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for three years old horses over the distance of miles on the dirt scheduled annually in February at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, New York (state), New York. The event currently carries a purse of $250,000. History The Withers was named for David D. Withers, David Dunham Withers (1821–1892), an important owner/breeder who won this race in 1890 with his colt, King Eric. The inaugural run of the Withers Stakes occurred in 1874 at Jerome Park Racetrack. It was raced there through 1889 after which it was hosted by the Morris Park Racecourse from 1890 through 1904, then Jamaica Race Course in 1956, and at Belmont Park from 1957 through 1959 and 1984 through 1996. Alcibiades (horse)
Alcibiades (1927–1957) was an American Thoroughbred racemare that won the Kentucky Oaks and was later a good broodmare. Background Owned and bred by Hal Price Headley at his Beaumont Farm near Lexington, Kentucky, Alcibiades was named for the ancient Greek soldier and statesman Alcibiades. She was sired by Supremus out of Regal Roman. On her sire's side, she goes back to the great stallion Domino. Racing career Alcibiades had seven starts with four wins at two-years. She won the Clipsetta Stakes and Debutante Stakes; ran second in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, and was retrospectively named U.S. Champion two-year-old filly of 1929. At the age of three years, she had 16 starts, for three wins. Alcibiades won the Grade I Kentucky Oaks, the Arlington Oaks and finished third in the Hawthorne Gold Cup, the Illinois and Latonia Oaks, and the Arlington Matron Handicap. Dauber (horse)
Dauber (1935–1947) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the 1938 Preakness Stakes. Bred by Sonny Whitney, he was sired by Harry Payne Whitney's 1913 Futurity Stakes winner, Pennant. His dam was Ship of War, a daughter of Man o' War. Dauber was purchased by William du Pont, Jr. and raced by his Foxcatcher Farms. Under trainer Richard Handlen, his best result in a major race for two-year-olds was a win in the 1937 Nursery Handicap and a third in the 1937 Pimlico Futurity. At age three, he notably earned a second-place finish to Stagehand in the 1938 Santa Anita Derby. He went on to compete in all three of the U.S. Triple Crown races. Ridden by jockey Maurice Peters, Dauber finished second to Lawrin in the Kentucky Derby, won the Preakness Stakes by seven lengths, and was second to Pasteurized in the Belmont Stakes. Potomac Handicap
The Potomac Handicap was an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually in the latter part of September at Havre de Grace Racetrack in Havre de Grace, Maryland. Open to three-year-old horses, it was raced on dirt at a distance of a mile-and-a-sixteenth. First run at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland, it was restricted to two-year-olds and run at a distance of one mile. The 1918 running was won by Calumet Farm's two-year-old colt, Be Frank, ridden by Lavelle EnsorThe following year the race moved to the Havre de Grace Racetrack and was changed to an event for three-year-olds and set at a distance of a mile-and-a-sixteenth. Lawrin
Lawrin (May 15, 1935 – September 1, 1955) was an American thoroughbred racehorse owned by Herbert M. Woolf who won the 1938 Kentucky Derby. He was the son of Insco. He is the only Kansas-bred winner of the Kentucky Derby and the first Kentucky Derby winner ridden by the great jockey Eddie Arcaro. Lawrin died in 1955 and was buried next to his sire, Insco, on Woolford Farm in what would become Prairie Village, Kansas. One can still visit his grave in the cul-de-sac at 59 Le Mans Court, Prairie Village, just northwest of Mission Road & Somerset. Racing career Lawrin was trained by U.S. Racing Hall of Fame Ben Jones He made 23 starts before the Derby in 1938, notably winning the Hialeah Stakes and the Flamingo Stakes at Florida's Hialeah Park. The American Champion Two-Year-Old Male Horse is an American Thoroughbred horse racing honor awarded annually in Thoroughbred flat racing. It became part of the Eclipse Awards program in 1971. The award originated in 1936 when the ''Daily Racing Form'' (DRF) began naming an annual champion. In the same year, the Baltimore-based ''Turf and Sports Digest'' magazine instituted a similar award. Starting in 1950, the Thoroughbred Racing Associations (TRA) began naming its own champion. The Massachusetts Handicap, frequently referred to as the "MassCap", was a flat thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds and up held annually at Suffolk Downs in East Boston, Massachusetts, United States. It was an ungraded stakes race run over a distance of 9 furlongs on dirt. The race received Grade III status by the American Graded Stakes Committee for 2009, but the race was never held. The MassCap was stripped of its graded status in 2011 as a result of not being run for two consecutive years. Belmont Futurity Stakes
The Futurity Stakes, commonly referred to as the Belmont Futurity, is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually in mid-September or October at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, United States. Open to two-year-old horses, it is raced on turf over a distance of six furlongs. The creation of James G. K. Lawrence, president of the Sheepshead Bay Race Track, the Futurity was originally run with the two-year-old offspring of mares which had been nominated before their birth. This rule remained in effect until 1957, when the race was opened to all two-year-old horses. The Futurity was run as a turf race for the first time in 2018. Champagne Stakes (United States)
The Champagne Stakes is an American Grade I Thoroughbred horse race for two-year-old horses. The race is run at a distance of one mile on the dirt at Belmont Park in October each year. Although the race is open to both colts and fillies, in practice it is New York's premier race for two-year-old colts and fillies enter the Frizette Stakes instead. The race is a Road to the Kentucky Derby Prep Season qualifying race. The winner receives 10 points toward qualifying for the Kentucky Derby. The race is also a part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge series. The winner automatically qualifies for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
