Meno Haas
Meno Haas aka Johann Meno Haas (6 April 1752 Hamburg – 16 October 1833 Berlin) was a German-born copperplate engraver, miniaturist, illustrator and painter. He was the brother of Georg Haas (engraver), George and Peter Haas (engraver), Peter Haas (1754–1804), and father of Jean Meno Haas. Meno was the son and student of the engraver Jonas Haas (1720–1775). He also trained under Johann Georg Preisler (1757–1831) at the ''Copenhagen Academy, Academy of Copenhagen'' Life Haas was only a year old when his family moved to Copenhagen. Meno (general), Meno begins the dialogue by asking Socrates whether virtue is taught, acquired by practice, or comes by nature. In order to determine whether virtue is teachable or not, Socrates tells Meno that they first need to determine what virtue is. When the characters speak of virtue, or rather ''arete (excellence), arete'', they refer to virtue in general, rather than particular virtues, such as justice or temperance. Erik Pauelsen
Erik Pauelsen (2 or 14 October 1749 – 20 February 1790) was a Denmark, Danish painter. He is most notable for his landscapes and was also a popular portraitist. However, he did not experience the same level of success as Jens Juel (painter), Jens Juel and Nicolai Abildgaard, his contemporaries, and in 1790 he committed suicide. Biography Erik Pauelsen was born in Østerballe Parish in Himmerland some time between 2 and 14 October 1749. From an early age he had his mind set on becoming an artist. He travelled to Copenhagen and studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1770 to 1777 where he won the large silver medal and the small gold medal in 1775 and finally the large gold medal in 1777 together with the Academy's travel scholarship. He travelled to Rome by way of Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Paris and visited Dresden and Berlin on his way back. Christian Vilhelm Duntzfelt
William Duntzfelt (8 September 1762 - 20 October 1809) was a Danish merchant and ship-owner. Early life Duntzfelt was born on 1762 in Negapatnam, then the capital of the Dutch Coromandel, to Johann Friedrich Düntzfeld (1725–1785), an engineer lieutenant in the Dutch East India Company, and Anna Abigael Krøckel. Duntzfelt's father left his wife and son when Duntzfelt was just two years old. A relative, Ole Bie, took care of the boy and secured him a position as a reserve assistant in Tranquebar and in 1777 as an assistant in Frederiksnagore. Over the years he was promoted through the ranks, initially in the service of the Danish Asiatic Company and later in the local government. Frederick II (german: Friedrich II.; 24 January 171217 August 1786) was King in Prussia from 1740 until 1772, and King of Prussia from 1772 until his death in 1786. Jens Juel (12 May 1745 – 27 December 1802) was a Danish painter, primarily known for his many portraits, of which the largest collection is on display at Frederiksborg Castle. He is regarded as the leading Danish portrait painter of the 18th century. Early life and career He was born in the house of his mother's brother Johan Jørgensen, who was a school teacher in Balslev on the island of Funen. Sophia Louise of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (Sofie Luise; 6 May 1685 – 29 July 1735) was Queen consort in Prussia by marriage to King Frederick I of Prussia. She was famed for her beauty. Christian Horneman
Christian Horneman (15 August 1765 – 7 March 1844) was a Danish miniature and pastels painter, mainly known for portraits. He was the father of the composer Emil Horneman and grandfather of C. F. E. Horneman, also a composer. Biography Horneman was born on 15 August 1765 in Copenhagen. He attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1780, winning its small silver medal in 1785, and its large silver medal in 1786. In 1787 he went abroad to further his studies and it would take sixteen years before he returned to Denmark. He specialized in portrait miniatures. Bernhard Rode
Bernhard Rode (25 July 1725 28 June 1797) was a Prussian artist and engraver well known for portraying historical scenes and allegorical works. He knew most of the central figures in the Berlin Enlightenment as Friedrich Nicolai and Gotthold Lessing, and the philosophical and political discussions of the Berlin Philosophs informed much of the subject matter of his artistic work. His paintings include several works depicting, in various guises, the King of Prussia Frederick the Great, who ruled the Prussia during much of Rode's lifetime.
