The Mendoza Open, or the Western Open, was a golf tournament on the TPG Tour, the official professional golf tour in Argentina. Golf
Golf is a club-and-ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible. Golf, unlike most ball games, cannot and does not use a standardized playing area, and coping with the varied terrains encountered on different courses is a key part of the game. Rafael Echenique
Rafael Echenique (born 18 October 1980) is an Argentine professional golfer. Early life and amateur career Echenique was born in San Luis, Argentina. He won the Argentine Amateur Rankings in 1997/98. Professional career Echenique turned pro in 1999. Having failed to gain a place on the European Tour via the qualifying school on four occasions, he finally won a card on the main tour by virtue of finishing seventh on the 2006 Challenge Tour, helped by winning the Telia Challenge Waxholm in Sweden. He also finished second in the Apulia San Domenico Grand Final. Later that year he won the biggest title of his career, the Argentine Open in his home country. Echenique's first year on the European Tour was highlighted by a second-place finish in the TCL Classic as he just did enough to retain his playing privileges for the following season. Antonio Cerdá
Antonio Cerdá (10 December 1921 – 28 November 2010) was an Argentine professional golfer. Cerdá finished second in the 1951 Open Championship to Max Faulkner, and second in the 1953 Open Championship to Ben Hogan, among seven consecutive top-ten finishes in the championship. He won several national opens in Europe in the 1950s and won the first Canada Cup with Roberto De Vicenzo in 1953 for Argentina. Later in his career, Cerdá would emigrate to Mexico, and also represented that country five times at the World Cup, finishing third in 1967. After an outstanding professional career, Cerdá dedicated over 40 years to golf instruction, particularly to young players in Mexico, like his son Antonio Oscar Cerdá. Fidel De Luca
Fidel de Luca (29 April 1922 – 6 June 2007) was an Argentine professional golfer. Born in San Isidro, Buenos Aires, he worked as a caddie in Buenos Aires, before turning professional in 1948. De Luca won the Argentine Professional Ranking nine times, but only competed in three major championships, appearing twice in the British Open, in 1958 and 1960, and once in the Masters Tournament in 1962. In 1958, on the European circuit, he won the German Open, and finished fourth in French Open. De Luca represented Argentina on nine occasions in the World Cup, with a best finish of second place in partnership with Roberto De Vicenzo in the 1962 edition, which was held on home soil at the Jockey Club in Buenos Aires. Raúl Fretes
Raúl Fretes (born 13 September 1965) is a Paraguayan professional golfer. Fretes was born in Asunción and turned pro in 1990. He won the South American Tour Order of Merit in 1994 and 1998. He won the 2005 World Golf Teachers Cup. Fretes played on the Tour de las Américas and his best finish was second in the TLA Players Championship in 2003 and the Center Open in 2007. Armando Saavedra
Armando Saavedra (born 27 September 1954) is an Argentine professional golfer. Born in Chile, Saavedra worked as a caddie in Buenos Aires, before turning professional in 1974. Saavedra won the Argentine Professional Ranking in 1979, but only competed in four major championships, in the British Open in 1979, 1980, 1985 and 1990. He competed on the European Tour from 1978 to 1979 and from 1985 to 1992 and obtained three top ten finishes: T8 at the Scandinavian Enterprise Open in 1979, T5 at the Peugeot Open de France in 1986 and 7th at the Open Renault de Baleares in 1990. He competed on the Canadian Tour in 1979 and his best finish was third in the Canadian PGA Championship. In 1985, Saavedra lost in a playoff at the Kentab Open (Sweden). José Cóceres
José Eusebio Cóceres (born 14 August 1963) is an Argentine professional golfer who spent many years on the European Tour and the PGA Tour. Cóceres was born in Argentina's Chaco province. He is one of 11 children who grew up in a two-bedroom house. He became a caddie and taught himself the game. Cóceres turned professional in 1986 and won a place on the European Tour at the 1990 Qualifying School. After struggling in 1991 and 1992 he performed steadily on the tour from 1993 onwards, and in 2000 he reached a career high of thirteenth on the Order of Merit. His two European Tour wins came at the 1994 Heineken Open Catalonia and the 2000 Dubai Desert Classic. In 2001, Cóceres switched to the PGA Tour. Rubén Alvarez (30 May 1961 – 9 November 2014) was an Argentine professional golfer. Alvarez was born in Pilar, Buenos Aires. He worked as a caddie in Buenos Aires, before turning professional in 1986. Alvarez won the Argentine Qualifying School in 1986, and went on to win the Argentine Tour Ranking (Order of Merit) in 1991, but he only competed once in a major championships, the British Open in 1994. He competed on the Challenge Tour in 1991, with a best of two second-place finishes, the Ramlösa Open and the Jede Hot Cup, both held in Sweden. He competed on the European Tour from 1993 to 1995, and had two top ten finishes, coming 9th in both the 1994 Tenerife Open and the 1995 Madeira Island Open. TPG Tour
The TPG Tour (Tour de Profesionales de Golf) is the principal professional golf tour in Argentina. The tour was formed in 2007, following disputes within the PGA of Argentina, who had operated the main professional tour in the country in previous years. The tour operated exclusively in Argentina in its inaugural season, but this changed in 2008 with the inclusion of the Carlos Franco Invitational, held in Paraguay. There were seventeen events in 2007 and sixteen in 2008, including the flagship Argentine Open and Argentine Masters, as well as the major regional opens, the South Open, Center Open, North Open and Coast Open. The TPG Tour developed a close relationship with the higher level Tour de las Américas, with several events being co-sanctioned, which resulted in increased prize funds and stronger fields. Sebastián Fernández (golfer)
Sebastián Fernández (born 8 September 1973) is an Argentine professional golfer. Fernández was born in Buenos Aires. He worked as a caddie in Buenos Aires, before turning professional in 1991. He won the Argentine Tour Order of Merit in 2000. He won three Argentine PGA Championships, in 1991, 2001 and 2005, the first as an 18-year-old, and also came second in 2003. Fernández competed on the Challenge Tour from 2003 to 2007, winning one tournament, the Costa Rica Open in 2003, and finishing second in the Skandia PGA Open (Sweden) in 2003, the Costa Rica Open in 2005 and the Challenge of Ireland in 2006. Mauricio Molina (golfer)
Mauricio Molina (born 20 December 1966) is an Argentine professional golfer. Career Molina was born in Rio Cuarto, Cordoba. He worked as a caddie in Buenos Aires, before turning professional in 1985. He is the nephew of the Argentine golfer, Florentino Molina. Molina won several tournaments in Argentina and South America, including the Mendoza Open in 1999 and the Metropolitan Championship in 2009. In 1997 he shot 59 in the first round of the Nautico Hacoaj Grand Prix to set the record for the best round in Argentina. In 2009 Molina played on the Canadian Tour and recorded two victories at the Costa Rica Classic and Mexican PGA Championship, finishing the season in fourth place on the Order of Merit.
