Mendeleyevo (russian: Менделе́ево) is an urban locality (a work settlement) in Solnechnogorsky District of Moscow Oblast, Russia, which stands on the Klyazma River, about from its source, near the city of Zelenograd, and opposite of the ancient Russian village of Lyalovo. Population: It was founded in 1957 as a closed town attached to the All-Union (now All-Russian) Scientific Research Institute for Physical-Engineering and Radiotechnical Metrology ( VNIIFTRI), and is named after the famous Russian chemist Dmitry Mendeleyev who was an eminent metrologist as well. Until 1947, it was known by its German name Juditten ( lt, Judyčių; pl, Judyty) as first a suburb of and then a quarter of Königsberg, Germany. Juditten Church was a site of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages. The philosopher Johann Christoph Gottsched was born in Juditten in 1700. Etymology The estate was first documented ca. 1287 as ''duas villas sic nominatas Gaudityn'' near Königsberg. The name was derived from the Old Prussian words ''gaudis'' (melancholy) and ''juodas'' (dark), describing the landscape. Separately, Eugen Reichel, a historian of Gottsched, attributed the name to a converted Sudovian chieftain known as ''Gedete'' who had relocated to Sambia. Mendeleyevo (russian: Менделе́ево, german: Poggenpfuhl, lt, Pogenfulis) is a rural locality (a settlement) in the Guryevsky District, Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia. History In 1454, King Casimir IV Jagiellon incorporated the region to the Kingdom of Poland upon the request of the anti-Teutonic Prussian Confederation. After the subsequent Thirteen Years' War (1454–1466), it became a part of Poland as a fief held by the Teutonic Knights. From the 18th century it formed part of the Kingdom of Prussia, and from 1871 it was also part of the German Empire. On 30 April 1874 it became the seat of Amtsbezirk Poggenpfuhl within East Prussia. Until 1939 it was part of Landkreis Königsberg (Preußen), then from 1939 to 1945 part of Landkreis Samland im Regierungsbezirk Königsberg. The classification system of inhabited localities in Russia and some other post-Soviet states has certain peculiarities compared with those in other countries. Classes During the Soviet time, each of the republics of the Soviet Union, including the Russian SFSR, had its own legislative documents dealing with classification of inhabited localities. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the task of developing and maintaining such classification in Russia was delegated to the federal subjects.Articles 71 and 72 of the Constitution of Russia do not name issues of the administrative and territorial structure among the tasks handled on the federal level or jointly with the governments of the federal subjects.
