Mendel (Hungarian Family)
The Jewish Hungarian family of Mendel is the name of a prominent Hungarian family which flourished in the latter half of the 15th century and in the first half of the 16th in Ofen (Buda). Members of three generations of it are known; namely, Jacob, Israel, and Isaac Mendel, who held the office of "Princeps Judæorum", "Supremus Judæorum," or "Præfectus Judæorum" between 1482 and 1539. This office, which seems to have existed only during that period, was created by King Matthias Corvinus in order to give the Jews an accredited representative at court, who at the same time should be responsible for the payment of their taxes. The "Præfectus Judæorum" was empowered to impose fines and other penalties on the Jews. As an official of the crown he was exempted from wearing the Jewish hat. Hungarian Jews
The history of the Jews in Hungary dates back to at least the Kingdom of Hungary, with some records even predating the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin in 895 CE by over 600 years. Written sources prove that Jewish communities lived in the medieval Kingdom of Hungary and it is even assumed that several sections of the heterogeneous Magyar tribes, Hungarian tribes practiced Judaism. Jewish officials served the king during the early 13th century reign of Andrew II of Hungary, Andrew II. From the second part of the 13th century, the general religious tolerance decreased and Hungary's policies became similar to the treatment of the Jewish population in Western Europe. Sándor Büchler
Alexander Büchler (, ; 24 September 1869 in Fülek ( Fiľakovo), Kingdom of Hungary – July 1944 in Auschwitz) was a Hungarian rabbi and educator. He is a son of the Talmudist rabbi Phineas Büchler of Mór. He was educated at the gymnasium in Székesfehérvár and at the university and the seminary of Budapest; he received the degree of Ph.D. in 1893, and was ordained as rabbi in 1895. In 1897 he was called to Keszthely. Johann Christian Von Engel
Johann Christian von Engel (1770–1814) was an Austrians, Austrian historian of Ukrainian, Romanian, Hungarian, Croatian, and German history. Biography He was born in Leutschau (today Levoča, Slovakia), then belonging to Kingdom of Hungary under Habsburg monarchy, and received his education at the University of Göttingen, where Christian Gottlob Heyne, Heyne and August Ludwig von Schlözer, Schlözer were among his teachers.
