Menda (Chalcidice)
Mende ( grc, Μένδη), also Mendae or Mendai (Μένδαι), or Menda (Μένδα), or Mendis, was an ancient Greek city located on the western coast of the Pallene peninsula in Chalkidiki, facing the coast of Pieria across the narrow Thermaic Gulf and near the modern town of Kalandra. History Mende was probably built during the 9th century BC by Eretrian colonists. The city owes its name to the ''minthe'' plant, a species of mint that still sprouts in the area. Mende's abundant lumber resources and possession of silver, gold and lead mines led to its rapid development. From the 6th century BC, it was one of the cities that controlled trade routes along the coast of Thrace; there were even confirmed dealings with the Greek colonies in Italy, especially concerning the export of the famous local wine ''Mendaeos oinos''. Menda, Kumamoto
is a town located in Kuma District, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. As of April 2017, the town has an estimated population of 15,796. The total area is 159.49 km2. Asagiri was created by the merger of 5 smaller towns and villages on April 1, 2003. Those included the town of Menda, and the villages of Ōkaharu, Ue, Sue and Fukada, all from Kuma District. Soybeans, strawberries, melons and tobacco are also produced here. Asagiri is in the Kuma District region where shōchū, a popular rice alcohol is produced and consumed. The village of Sue (now part of Asagiri) was the topic of a 1939 text, ''Suye Mura, a Japanese Village'' by John Embree. The word "asagiri" translates as "morning mist". Geography Mt. Menda (river)
The Menda (russian: Менда; sah, Менда) is a river in Yakutia (Sakha Republic), Russia. It is a tributary of the Lena with a length of and a drainage basin area of . The Menda is the second largest river of Khangalassky District. The village of Tit-Ebya is located near the mouth of the river. The Kyuyulyur waterfalls ( sah, Күрүлүүр), a tourist attraction, are located in the Menda. Course The Menda is a right tributary of the Lena. It is formed at the confluence of the Tala-Kyuyol and Onney-Ulur rivers in the Lena Plateau, between the Lena and the Amga. It heads in a roughly northern direction across taiga areas in its upper and middle course, parallel to the Tamma to the east. Then it bends to the northwest in its lower course, when it reaches the Lena floodplain and flows slowly among the swamps and small lakes of the area.
