''Memsahab'' is a Hindi film released in 2008. The film stars Yukta Mookhey and Vijay Raaz. Mookhey plays the role of a Sikhs, Sikh woman forced into prostitution after the death of her parents. Her character was inspired by Shabana Azmi's award-winning role of a prostitute in the 1983 film ‘Mandi (1983 film), Mandi’. Synopsis The film is based on the aftermath of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, 1984 riots involving a section of Indian National Congress, Congress party activists and Sikhs in Delhi and other parts of northern India. Congress party activists targeted and killed thousands of Sikhs. Yukta Mookhey plays the character of Anjali, who is a victim of the riots and is pushed into prostitution. Anjali’s mother is raped by the rioters, and her father is shot dead. Anjali grows up with traumatic memories of her childhood. Yukta Mookhey
Yukta Inderlal Mookhey is an Indian civic activist and the winner of Miss World 1999. She is the fourth Indian woman to win Miss World and was previously crowned as Femina Miss India World in 1999. She is a former model and actress, and has worked in Hindi films. Early life Mookhey was born in Bangalore in a Sindhi family and was raised in Dubai until Mookhey was seven years of age. Her family moved back to Mumbai in June 1986. Her mother Aroona used to run a grooming saloon in Santa Cruz, Mumbai and her father, Inderlal Mookhey was a former Managing Director of a clothing company. Vijay Raaz
Vijay Raaz (born 5 June 1963) is an Indian actor, film director and narrator, who predominantly appears in Hindi films. He debuted with ''Bhopal Express'' (1999) and since worked in more than 90 films. His breakthrough came when he played the role of Dubeyji in the movie ''Monsoon Wedding'' in 2001. Ustad Rafique Khan (born 30 June 1968) is an Indian musician and composer who plays the sitar. He belongs to the sixth generation of musicians from the Dharwad Gharana. His father, the late Ustad Abdul Karim Khan was a distinguished sitarist at his time, and his grandfather who was awarded the 'Sitar Ratna', Rahimat Khan was accredited for adding the base octave to the sitar and for modifying the three-string sitar to the seven-string instrument that is common today. Kamathipura
Kamathipura (also spelled Kamthipura) is a neighbourhood in Mumbai, India known for prostitution. It was first settled after 1795 with the construction of causeways that connected the erstwhile seven islands of Mumbai. Initially known as Lal Bazaar, it got its name from the ''Kamathis'' (workers) of other areas of the country, who were labourers on construction sites. Due to tough police crackdowns, in the late 1990s with the rise of AIDS and government's redevelopment policy that helped sex workers to move out of the profession and subsequently out of Kamathipura, the number of sex workers in the area has dwindled.
