Memorial Hall (Dedham, Massachusetts)
Memorial Hall served as both the town hall of Dedham, Massachusetts from 1868 until 1962 and as the Town's monument to the soldiers from the town who died in the Civil War. Background After nearly 200 years of Town government, the Town Meeting decided to build a town hall on Bullard Street in 1828. By 1858, however, a town committee was complaining that "the present town house is neither in location, size, or style, sufficient to meet the reasonable requirements of the town." It was too far away from the center village and too ugly they said, and though there were over 1,000 voters in the town the building could not accommodate more than 275. Town meetings were frequently crowded and confused in the townhouse, and it was difficult to hear speakers and determine votes. Ames School
The Ames Schoolhouse is a historic school building at 450 Washington Street in Dedham, Massachusetts. It was originally part of the Dedham Public Schools. It currently serves as the town hall and senior center for the Town of Dedham. The Colonial Revival structure was built in 1897. It was named in honor of American Revolution-era politician Fisher Ames. It is a large H-shaped building, with a central section flanked by symmetrical projecting bays on either side. It has a hip roof with a deep dentillated eave, and pilastered corners. The main entrance is set under broad arch at the center, with a Palladian window above. Seth Ames
Seth Ames (April 18, 1805 – August 15, 1881) was a justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court from 1869 to 1881. He was appointed by Governor William Claflin. He was born April 18, 1805, and graduated from Harvard College in 1825. Theron Metcalf
Theron Metcalf (October 16, 1784 – November 12, 1875) was an American attorney and politician from Massachusetts. He was a New England jurist and served as an associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. Personal life Metcalf was born in Franklin, Massachusetts, the son of Hanan Metcalf and Mary (Allen) Metcalf. He graduated from Brown University in 1805, and studied law at the Litchfield Law School after graduation. On November 5, 1809, he married Julia Tracy, daughter of United States Congressman Uriah Tracy. Metcalf and his wife had three children: George Tracy Metcalf, William Pitt Metcalf and Julia Metcalf. Temperance Hall (Dedham, Massachusetts)
Temperance Hall was an assembly hall in Dedham, Massachusetts associated with the temperance movement. It previously served as the Norfolk County Courthouse. History After the creation of Norfolk County in 1793, a new courthouse was ordered to be constructed. It was completed in 1795. It was found to be too small, however, and the ceilings were so low as to stifle people in the courtrooms. After a new Norfolk County Courthouse was constructed in 1827, the old building was sold at public auction to Harris Monroe and Erastus Worthington. The pair speculated that the Town may want to use it as a town hall, and so they dragged it south down Court Street to a new lot. The Town decided to build an entirely new structure, however, on Bullard Street. Erastus Worthington
Erastus Worthington (October 8, 1779 – June 27, 1842) represented Dedham, Massachusetts in the Great and General Court. Personal life Worthington was born in Belchertown, Massachusetts on October 8, 1779, to David and Affa (née Gilbert) Worthington. In 1804 he was graduated from Williams College. On May 2, 1815, Worthington married Sally Ellis, the daughter of Abner and Marth Ellis of Dedham. Together they had three sons: Ellis, Albert, and Eratus Jr. His son, Eratus Jr., also had a son named Eratus Worthington. Career After graduation, Worthington taught for a time and then began to study law in the office of John Heard. He was admitted to the bar in Boston in 1809 and moved to Dedham in the same year to practice law. He was admitted to the bar of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in 1813. The 18th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment was a Union regiment that fought in the American Civil War. History Initial training The regiment was organized at Readville and Boston in July 1861. Recruited chiefly from the counties of Norfolk, Bristol, and Plymouth, it then moved to at Camp Brigham in Dedham for basic training. It was formed, primarily, with men of the Bristol, Norfolk and Plymouth counties of Massachusetts with a 3-year enlistment period. The regiment originally consisted of 10 companies, band and regimental staff. The regiment followed the standard structure of the three-year volunteer regiments of ten companies of 83-101 men (which could be split into two battalions on an ad hoc basis) and a field staff of 36-66. Henry O (; born July 7, 1927) is a former Chinese-American actor. He is the father of Ji-li Jiang, the author of ''Red Scarf Girl''. Augustus Bradford Endicott (September 10, 1818 – November 21, 1910) was a Massachusetts state legislator and sheriff of Norfolk County. Biography Endicott, the son of Elijah Endicott and Cynthia (Childs) Endicott, was born September 10, 1818, in Canton, Massachusetts. He was a direct descendant of Gilbert Endicott, who arrived in Massachusetts from England in 1658. Following an apprenticeship as a carpenter, Endicott moved to Chelsea, Massachusetts at age 21 where he was employed for ten years as a pattern maker in a foundry. In 1853, Endicott moved to Dedham, Massachusetts, and was appointed deputy sheriff of Norfolk County for Dedham the same year. He served in that position until 1885. Col. Eliphalet Stone (May 12, 1813 – February 5, 1886) was an American politician. Personal life Stone was born May 12, 1813, in Hubbardston, Massachusetts. His father died when he was six, and he was adopted by a relative.
