The term is typically used to describe websites that either: #analyze blog posts to determine what web pages are being discussed or cited most often on the World Wide Web, or #allow users to vote for links to web pages that they find of interest. Sites in the latter group are often referred to as social media sites. Sample systems The original publicly viewable memetracker was Blogdex, which is now defunct. A blog (a truncation of "weblog") is a discussion or informational website published on the World Wide Web consisting of discrete, often informal diary-style text entries (posts). Posts are typically displayed in reverse chronological order so that the most recent post appears first, at the top of the web page. Until 2009, blogs were usually the work of a single individual, occasionally of a small group, and often covered a single subject or topic. Blogdex
Blogdex was an online resource for understanding hot topics of discussion in the blogosphere. The site offered a time-weighted list of links to online content cited by more than one monitored blog in the recent past. Each link received a score based both on the number of different blogs citing it and the recency of those citings; the list thus typically features both popular oddities of the day as well as informative and/or controversial source material for current topics of public debate. Despite its explicit focus on blogs, it can be thought of as the original memetracker, and the inspiration for later commercial sites such as tailrank.com, Digg.com, and other social media sites. Topic Modeling
In statistics and natural language processing, a topic model is a type of statistical model for discovering the abstract "topics" that occur in a collection of documents. Topic modeling is a frequently used text-mining tool for discovery of hidden semantic structures in a text body. Intuitively, given that a document is about a particular topic, one would expect particular words to appear in the document more or less frequently: "dog" and "bone" will appear more often in documents about dogs, "cat" and "meow" will appear in documents about cats, and "the" and "is" will appear approximately equally in both. Techmeme
Techmeme is a technology news aggregator. The website has been described as "a one-page, aggregated, filtered, archiveable summary in near real-time of what is new and generating conversation". Overview Gabe Rivera was a compiler software engineer at Intel before launching tech.memeorandum on September 12, 2005. After working on tech.memeorandum for a year, it was renamed to Techmeme.
