The following is a list of members of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly between the 1897 elections and the 1901 elections, together known as the Third Parliament. Notes : On 12 May 1897, Henry Lefroy, the member for Moore, was appointed Minister for Education by Premier John Forrest, and on 27 October 1897, Richard Pennefather, the member for Greenough, was appointed Attorney-General. Both were therefore required to resign and contest ministerial by-elections, at which both were returned unopposed. : On 13 June 1899, George Hubble, the member for Gascoyne, resigned. Western Australian Legislative Assembly
The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The Legislative Assembly today has 59 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member electoral districts. Members are elected using the preferential voting system. As with all other Australian states and territories, voting is compulsory for all Australian citizens over the legal voting age of 18. Role and operation Most legislation in Western Australia is initiated in the Legislative Assembly. The party or coalition that can command a majority in the Legislative Assembly is invited by the Governor to form a government. West Kimberley was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1890 to 1904. Based in the western part of the Kimberley region, the district was one of the original 30 seats contested at the 1890 election. In 1898, its major settlements were Broome and Derby. It ceased to exist at the 1904 election, at which point it was amalgamated with the district of East Kimberley to form the new district of Kimberley. Plantagenet was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in Western Australia from 1890 to 1904. The district, located in the Great Southern area of the state, was one of the original 30 seats contested at the 1890 election. In 1900, the seat included a number of towns along the Great Southern Railway, including Broomehill, Tambellup, Cranbrook, Tenterden, Kendenup, and Mount Barker, as well as Kojonup, Denmark, and Jerramungup. Albert Hassell
Albert Young Hassell (15 November 184120 September 1918) was a prominent Australian pastoralist and politician. Born in Albany, on 15 November 1841, Albert was the second son of pastoralist John Hassell who had pioneered the area around Kendenup in the Great Southern region of Western Australia in 1840. The young Albert was educated at a private school in Albany leaving at age 11 to work on the family farm. Working on the property Albert Hassell eventually became manager of another of his father's properties near Jerramungup from 1861 to 1863. He became the first European to overland to Esperance during the time. From 1864 to 1878 Albert and his brother, John Frederick Hassell, ran the family businesses. Hassell ran for parliament and won a by-election representing the seat of Albany in the colony's first part-elective Legislative Council from 1871 to 1874; after the term expired he resigned from the post. Beverley was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1890 to 1950. The district was based on the rural town of Beverley lying to the east of Perth. It was one of the original 30 seats contested at the 1890 election. In 1898, it included Beverley and several other settlements along the Great Southern Railway, including Seabrook, Moorumbine, and Pingelly, as well as Narembeen farther west. Beverley was abolished at the 1950 election; its final member, James Mann, was transferred to the seat of Avon Valley. Charles Harper (15 July 1842 – 20 April 1912) was a pastoralist, newspaper proprietor and politician in colonial Western Australia. Biography Early life Charles Harper was born on 15 July 1842 at Nardi, near Toodyay in Western Australia. His father was Reverend Charles Harper, a Church of England minister, and his mother, Julia Gretchem Harper ''née'' Lukin. He was educated privately. Pastoral career He took up farming in Beverley, Western Australia. In 1861 and again in 1864, he explored with other pioneers in the Yilgarn district. From 1866, he was heavily involved in the pastoral industry. He was a pastoralist in the north-west of the state until 1868, overlanding to Geraldton in 1867 to secure provisions for Roebourne. Electoral District Of Perth
The Electoral district of Perth is a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Western Australia. Perth is named for the capital city of Western Australia whose central business district falls within its borders. It is one of the oldest electorates in Western Australia, with its first member having been elected in the inaugural 1890 elections of the Legislative Assembly. Perth has traditionally been a safe Labor seat Party, but was briefly held by Liberal Eleni Evangel between 2013 and 2017. Perth is currently held by Labor MLA John Carey. Lyall Hall
Henry Lyall Hall (22 July 1861 – 23 May 1935) was an Australian politician, serving as the member for Perth in the Legislative Assembly from 1897 until 1901. Biography Hall was born at Homebush near Avoca, Victoria, Australia, to Henry Hall, a miner and newspaper editor, and Elizabeth Bethell. He became a public servant in Victoria and was a telegraph clerk at Emerald Hill in 1884. On 11 December 1884 in Ballarat, he married Mary Page, with whom he had one son and four daughters. They moved to Western Australia in 1894, where he worked as an auctioneer and general land agent. In 1896 he was elected to the North Ward of Perth City Council for a two-year term, and after joining the governing Forrest party, he won the seat of Perth in the Legislative Assembly at the 1897 elections against Stephen Henry Parker. North Coolgardie was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1897 to 1901. The district was located in the Western Australian outback. In 1898, it included the settlements of Menzies and Goongarrie along the Menzies–Kalgoorlie railway line, as well as the more remote settlements of Mount Ida, Mount Leonora, Mulline, Niagara, and Yerilla, and the Mount Margaret goldfields. It existed for one term of parliament, and was represented in that time by Henry Gregory. Henry Gregory (politician)
Henry Gregory (15 March 1860 – 15 November 1940) was an Australian politician. He was a Ministerialist member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1897 to 1911, representing the electorates of North Coolgardie (1897-1901) and Menzies (1901-1911). He was state Minister for Mines from 1901 to 1904 under George Leake and Walter James and Minister for Mines and Railways from 1905 to 1911 under Hector Rason, Newton Moore and Frank Wilson. He rose to become Treasurer from 1910 to 1911, a role that also entailed him acting as Premier if Wilson was absent, but lost his seat at the 1911 state election. He subsequently entered federal politics as a member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1913 until his death in 1940, representing the electorates of Dampier (1911-1922) and Swan (1922-1940). Murray-Wellington is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The seat's current member is Labor MLA Robyn Clarke. William James George
William James George CMG (26 January 1853 – 10 March 1931) was an Australian engineer and politician who served in the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1895 to 1902 and from 1909 to 1930. He was a minister in the governments of Frank Wilson, Henry Lefroy, Hal Colebatch, and James Mitchell. Early life George was born in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England, to Eleanor (née Sheldon) and Henry Wellington George. He studied mechanical engineering at the Birmingham and Midland Institute, and emigrated to Australia in 1884, initially settling in Victoria. George moved to Western Australia in 1891, where he initially managed a timber plantation at Jarrahdale. He later opened a foundry in Perth, and was involved in the construction of the Victoria Dam, as well as the extensions of the Northern Railway to Mullewa and the South Western Railway to Bunbury.
