Ray Buckley (Australian Politician)
Ray Francis Buckley (11 February 1912 – 27 June 1989) was an Australian politician. He was born in Horsham to salesman Stanley John Thomas Buckley and bookkeeper Esther Estella, ''née'' Berry. Educated locally in state schools, he worked as an insurance inspector before entering parliament. Elected to Horsham City Council in 1956, he was mayor from 1961 to 1962 and served on council until 1965; he was also involved in the local Country Party and was an organiser for Wimmera MP Robert King. In 1967 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Electoral District Of St Kilda
The Electoral district of St Kilda was one of the inaugural electoral districts of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, abolished on 2 October 1992. St Kilda was one of the initial districts created in the first Victorian Legislative Assembly, 1856. It included an area south of the Yarra River and the then villages of St Kilda and Elsternwick. Brian Dixon (Australian Rules Footballer)
Brian James Dixon (born 20 May 1936) is a former Australian rules footballer and Victorian politician. Dixon played 252 VFL games for Melbourne between 1954 and 1968, playing mostly on the wing. He played in five premierships, winning Melbourne's best and fairest in 1960, while in 1961 he was selected in the All-Australian team and he also won the Tassie Medal for his performances at the 1961 Brisbane Carnival. In 2000 he was named in Melbourne's Team of the Century. Despite still playing football for Melbourne, he entered parliament in 1964, as the member for the now abolished seat of St Kilda, representing the Liberal Party. Being from the moderate wing of the party he clashed with then Premier Henry Bolte, especially over the hanging of Ronald Ryan which Dixon strongly opposed. William Thomas George Divers (1 September 1896 – 29 June 1978) was an Australian politician. He was an Australian Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1958 to 1970. He was born in Collingwood to brushmaker William Clinton Divers and Annie May Cozens. He attended the local state school and was a child actor until 1910. From 1910 to 1914 he was in the merchant navy; he served in the Royal Australian Navy from 1914 to 1918 during World War I and then returned to the merchant navy until 1920. He was a long-serving official in the Municipal Employees Union from the 1920s, initially as an organiser (1925-1937) and industrial officer (1937-1946). During the 1930s, he clashed with the Australian Workers' Union over their handling of pay disputes for municipal employees. Tom Darcy (Australian Politician)
Thomas Anthony Darcy (18 May 1893 – 27 December 1979) was an Australian politician. He was a Liberal Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1958 to 1970, representing the electorate of Polwarth. He was Minister of Water Supply and Minister of Mines in the Bolte government from 1964 to 1967. Darcy was born at Murroon, near Birregurra. He was educated at Murroon State School, and became a farmer and grazier there after leaving school. He served for four years overseas in World War I, in Syria with the 4th Light Horse Regiment, and was a company commander of the Volunteer Defence Corps' 19th battalion in World War II. In his industry, he served as Victorian state president and national vice-president of the Australian Primary Producers Union, and was an employers' representative for the Pastoral and Agricultural Wages Board. Leslie Cochrane
Leslie James Cochrane (29 August 1894 – 25 April 1972) was an Australian politician. He was born in East Brighton to gardener David Cochrane and Lucy Harriett Burgess. He moved to Caldermeade with his family at the age of eight, and served with the AIF in World War I on the Western Front, where he was seriously wounded. As a soldier settler he was granted land at Kooweerup, where he became a dairy farmer. In December 1919 he married Ivy Mary Wildes, with whom he had two children. He served on Cranbourne Shire Council from 1930 to 1964, with four terms as president (1935–36, 1946, 1949–50, 1957–58). In 1950 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Country Party member for Gippsland West. He was party whip from 1961 to 1970, when he retired from politics. The electoral district of Melbourne is an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It currently includes the localities of Docklands, Carlton, Melbourne, East Melbourne, West Melbourne, North Melbourne, Parkville, Newmarket, Kensington and Flemington, and includes Melbourne University. The district has been in existence since 1856 (it was abolished in 1859 and reestablished in 1889). The electorate was won in 2014 for the first time by Greens candidate Ellen Sandell. Arthur Clarey
Reynold Arthur Clarey (15 March 1897 – 9 May 1972) was an Australian politician. Born in South Yarra to estate agent Francis William Clarey and Catherine Lawson (his half-brother Percy would also go on to be a prominent politician and unionist), Arthur attended Flemington State School, Melbourne High School and Melbourne University, graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce. He was employed as a clerk with the Victorian Public Service from 1913 to 1920 and with BHP from 1920 to 1947. On 23 September 1940 he married Irene Mary Leech, who died in 1957; he remarried on 1 July 1958 Doris Jane McGinnis, ''née'' Blythe. Clarey joined the Labor Party in 1932, and was later president of the Clerks' Union. In 1955 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Melbourne. He was the auditor of the state branch from 1955 to 1970 and the parliamentary treasury spokesman from 1967 to 1970.
