Members Of The South Australian Legislative Council, 1877–1881
This is a list of members of the South Australian Legislative Council from 1877 to 1881. This was the sixth Legislative Council to be elected under the Constitution of 1856, which provided for a house consisting of eighteen members to be elected from the whole colony acting as one electoral district "The Province"; that six members, selected by lot, should be replaced at General Elections after four years, another six to be replaced four years later and thenceforth each member should have a term of twelve years. William Everard (South Australian Politician)
William Edward Everard (December 1819 – 25 August 1889) was a South Australian businessman and politician. Everard was the son of Dr. Charles George Everard (1794–1876) and his wife Catherine (1786–1866), originally of London. The family, which included his mother and brothers Charles John Everard (ca.1822 – 22 July 1892) and James George (died 3 May 1840, aged 15), arrived in Adelaide on the ship under Captain John Finlay Duff in 1836. His father was one of the first eighteen elected to South Australia's unicameral Legislative Council in 1839. By 1843 William and his brother Charles were farming a jointly-owned property in Myponga, while Dr. C. G. Everard was developing his properties "Ashford" and "Marshfield", to the west and east of the Bay Road respectively, and comprising much of the land between Keswick and Glenelg. Charles Burney Young
Charles Burney Young (7 July 1824 – 29 September 1904), generally referred to as C. B. Young, was a landholder, winemaker and politician in the early days of the colony of South Australia. History Young was born in England of Scottish ancestry and studied at London University. He married Nora Creina Bacon (11 January 1835 – 5 June 1925) of Swanscombe, Kent in 1851. They left for South Australia on 16 November 1854, in the ''Flora Kerr''. They were hospitably treated by Wilfrid Kent Hughes of "Avenel", Robe Terrace, North Adelaide, where Nora's second child was born, but died in August. They took a cottage in Ward Street, North Adelaide. Robert Alfred Tarlton
Robert Alfred Tarlton (21 April 1828 – 29 November 1918) was a businessman and politician in the early days of the colony South Australia. History Tarlton was born in Birmingham, England and trained for the Ministry. He married Caroline Walters in 1854 and emigrated to South Australia in 1858. In 1860 he had a draper's shop on Rundle Street and by 1861 was a director of G. & R. Wills & Co. Ltd., a position he held until 1869. He was in 1865 a founder of the Bank of Adelaide, along with Henry Ayers, Fred. C. Bayer, John Dunn, Thomas Magarey, William Morgan, William Peacock, Robert Barr Smith, Thomas Greaves Waterhouse and others. He was chairman of directors, Commercial Bank of South Australia in 1886 when manager Alexander Crooks and accountant Alexander McKenzie Wilson were charged with embezzlement. William Storrie
William Storrie ( − 19 June 1900) was a businessman and politician in the early days of the colony of South Australia. Born the third son of James Storrie of Glasgow, with brother James (ca.1829 – 16 July 1897) and sister Helen (died 25 November 1875) he emigrated to South Australia in 1849. He went into business for himself, then around 1864 brought in his brother to found the firm of W & J Storrie, agents, later wholesale hardware merchants of 19 Currie Street, Adelaide. He withdrew from active participation in the company but retained a financial interest. It was converted to a limited liability company, with brother-in-law W. T. Tassie appointed as manager. Henry Scott (Mayor Of Adelaide)
Henry Scott (29 May 1836 – 16 December 1913) was a South Australian businessman, politician and mayor of Adelaide History Henry was the seventh son of Thomas Scott, of Boode House, near Braunton, in Devonshire, a member of an old Scottish family, and was educated in Bristol. At the age of 18 he followed his brother Abraham (ca.1817–1903) to Adelaide and helped run his wool-broking business, which he took over around 1866. Philip Santo
Philip Santo (7 August 1818 – 17 December 1889) was a South Australian politician and businessman. History Santo was born at Saltash, Cornwall, and trained to be a carpenter. At the age of 22 he left for South Australia on the ship ''Brightman'', arriving in Adelaide, South Australia, Adelaide in December 1840. He worked as a builder in Adelaide, then Burra, South Australia, Burra. William Sandover
William Sandover (21 September 1822 – 5 March 1909) was a British hotelier and politician in South Australia, the father of Alfred Sandover MBE and great grandfather of Raymond Sandover DSO, ED. History He was born in Cornwood, Devon, England, on 21 September 1822, and spent most of his youth in London. He emigrated to South Australia on the ''Glenelg'', arriving on 13 February 1849; William Morgan was a fellow-passenger. He joined the gold rush to Victoria and was moderately successful, and on his return took up hotel keeping. In March 1854 William Sandover was granted the publican's licence for the Sturt Hotel, Grenfell Street, which was destroyed by fire some 18 months later. James Garden Ramsay
The Honourable John James Garden Ramsay (1827 – 20 January 1890) was an industrialist and politician in colonial South Australia. Ramsay was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and served his apprenticeship as an engineer at the St. Rollox Ironworks in Glasgow, and came to South Australia in 1857, establishing four years later at Mount Barker an agricultural implement and machine manufactory, which represented the starting point of what later grew into the largest business of its kind in the colony. Ramsay represented Mount Barker in the South Australian Legislative Assembly from 5 April 1870 (along with John Cheriton), and on 7 July 1880 was elected to the South Australian Legislative Council, for which he sat until of his death. Alexander Borthwick Murray
Alexander Borthwick Murray (14 February 1816 – 17 March 1903) was an Australian sheep breeder and parliamentarian in the early days of South Australia. He married his business partner Margaret Tinline after they had established a successful sheep business. History Murray was born at Langshall Burn, in the parish of Eskdalemuir, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. After spending six years acclimatizing Cheviot sheep to the highlands of Inverness and Ross-shire he emigrated as a full fare-paying passenger in the ''Lady Lillford'' to South Australia, arriving at Holdfast Bay on 27 September 1839. William Milne (politician)
Sir William Milne (17 May 1822 – 23 April 1895) was an Australian entrepreneur and politician, serving as the member for Onkaparinga in the South Australian House of Assembly from 1857 to 1868. He was elected to the South Australian Legislative Council in 1869, and was President of the South Australian Legislative Council from 25 July 1873 to 1881. Life Born in Wester-Common, near Glasgow, Milne was educated in Glasgow and emigrated to South Australia, arriving in the ''Palmyra'' at Port Adelaide on 29 October 1839, where he married Eliza Disher on 4 March 1842. Thomas Hogarth
Thomas Hogarth (8 September 1815 – 1 September 1893) was a politician in the early days of the Colony of South Australia. History Thomas Hogarth was born in Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland, and emigrated with his brother John to South Australia on the ''Delhi'', arriving in December 1838. He was for a time farming at the Black Forest with William Bowman and with Robert Patterson. He worked at roadmaking and flour-milling, then the manufacture of agricultural implements (and much later was involved with John Ridley in improvements to his reaper). His brother John died a few months after arriving in Australia.
