Members Of The New South Wales Legislative Assembly, 1944–1947
Members of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly who served in the 34th parliament held their seats from 1944 to 1947. They were elected at the 1944 state election, and at by-elections. The opposition Democratic Party merged into the nascent Liberal Party in late 1944, becoming the New South Wales branch of the new party. The Speaker was Daniel Clyne. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. 1945 Ryde State By-election
A by-election was held in the state electoral district of Ryde on 3 February 1945. The by-election was triggered by the death of James Shand (). The by-election was won by candidate Eric Hearnshaw. This was the first election contested and first election won by the Liberal Party in New South Wales since the founding of its New South Wales division a month earlier in January 1945. Hearnshaw also became the first Liberal Party member in the New South Wales parliament, as at the time, parliamentary members of the Democratic Party had yet to join the Liberal Party. Alexander Mair
Alexander Mair (25 August 18893 August 1969) was an Australian politician who served as Premier of New South Wales from 5 August 1939 to 16 May 1941. Born in Melbourne, Mair worked in various businesses there before moving to Albury, New South Wales where he went on to be a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for fourteen years. In 1932, Mair was elected to the seat of Albury and was re-elected a further four times. He rose quickly through the cabinet of Bertram Stevens' United Australia Party government, becoming an Assistant Minister in April 1938, Minister for Labour and Industry in June and Colonial Treasurer in October. A staunch supporter of Stevens throughout his Premiership, Mair became his successor as Premier in August 1939 following Stevens' defeat in a no-confidence motion moved by renegade Minister, Eric Spooner. A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Goulburn on 1 June 1946 because of the resignation of Jack Tully () to be appointed Agent-General for New South Wales in London. Dates Candidates * Ray Bladwell, the Country Party candidate, was a local grazier and wool broker. Laurie Tully
Laurence John Tully (30 July 1917 – 27 June 1981) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1946 until 1965. He was a member of the Labor Party (ALP) . Tully was born in Sydney and was the son of Jack Tully the member for Goulburn in the Legislative Assembly between 1925 and 1946. He was educated at St Patrick's College, Goulburn and the law faculty of the University of Sydney. He was called to the bar in 1942. During World War Two, he served with the Royal Australian Air Force. After an unsuccessful campaign in the seat of Temora in 1944, Tully was elected to the parliament as the Labor member for Goulburn at the 1946 by-election caused by the resignation of his father. Jack Tully
John Moran Tully (1 December 1885 – 27 October 1966) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1925 to 1932 and from 1935 to 1946. Born at Mulgoa to railway officer Peter Tully and teacher Sarah Lovat, he attended St Patrick's College in Goulburn before becoming a public servant. He was an assistant at the public library from 1903 to 1908 and a draughtsman at the Registrar General's Department from 1908 to 1925 and 1932 to 1935. On 4 October 1916 he married Dorothy Kitching, with whom he had two sons. He had joined the Labor Party in 1913 and became president of the Chatswood branch. 1945 Neutral Bay State By-election
A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly seat of Neutral Bay on Saturday 15 December 1945. It was triggered by the death of the Leader of the New South Wales Liberal Party and Leader of the Opposition, Reginald Weaver, who died a week after suffering a mild heart attack in the Legislative Assembly chamber. The seat was subsequently won by barrister Ivan Black (). Neutral Bay being a safe Liberal seat, the Labor Party chose not to field a candidate. Ivan Black
Ivan Carlisle Black (6 July 1913 – 8 July 1990) was an Australian politician and a member of the Liberal Party. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1945 until 1962. Black was born in Ryde, New South Wales. He was the son of a mechanical engineer and was educated at Fort Street High School and the University of Sydney. He graduated in Law and was called to the Bar in 1939. During World War 2, Black served with the Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve in the English Channel and North Sea. He was a prisoner of war in Germany between 1942 and 1945. Black was elected to the New South Wales Parliament as the member for Neutral Bay at a by-election caused by the death of the party leader, Reg Weaver. Reginald Weaver
Reginald Walter Darcy Weaver (18 July 187612 November 1945) was an Australian conservative parliamentarian who served in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for 28 years. Serving from 1917 in the backbenches, he entered the cabinet of Thomas Bavin in 1929 as Secretary for Mines and Minister for Forests until he returned to opposition in 1930. Following the success of the United Australia Party in the 1932 election, Weaver returned as the Secretary for Public Works and Minister for Health in the Stevens ministry. In 1935 he was dropped from the ministry but was later elected as the Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1937, holding office until the Mair Government lost power in 1941.
