New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. Edmund Barton
Sir Edmund "Toby" Barton, (18 January 18497 January 1920) was an Australian politician and judge who served as the first prime minister of Australia from 1901 to 1903, holding office as the leader of the Protectionist Party. He resigned to become a founding member of the High Court of Australia, where he served until his death. Barton was an early supporter of the federation of the Australian colonies, the goal of which he summarised as "a nation for a continent, and a continent for a nation". After the retirement of Henry Parkes he came to be seen as the leader of the federation movement in New South Wales. He was a delegate to the constitutional conventions, playing a key role in the drafting of a national constitution, and was one of the lead campaigners for federation in the subsequent referendums. Herbert Brown (Australian Politician)
Herbert Harrington Brown (12 March 1839 – 1 July 1929) was an Australian politician. He was born at Parramatta to John and Charlotte Brown, who farmed in the upper Paterson district from 1843. He was educated at Newcastle and Cook's River, and on 4 November 1860 married Harriet Lindeman, with whom he had six children. He was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Paterson at the by-election in 1875. The seat was replaced by Durham in 1880, and Brown held the seat until his defeat in 1898. When the party system emerged he was initially a Free Trader, but he drifted towards the Protectionists over the years. Alexander Bowman (Australian Politician)
Alexander Bowman (1838 – 10 July 1892) was an Australian politician. He was born in Richmond. The Bowman brothers: George Pearce Bowman (1821–1870), pastoralist, Robert Bowman (1830–1873), medical practitioner, and Alexander Bowman (1838–1892), parliamentarian, were the eldest, fifth and seventh sons of Eliza Sophia Pearce and George Bowman, pioneers of the Hawkesbury region. He was the grandson of John Bowman. He attended Cape's College at Darlinghurst and Carey's School at Windsor before studying at the University of Sydney, from which he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1858. He moved to Queensland in 1859 but later that year returned to New South Wales, living at Singleton where he became a racehorse breeder and pastoralist. On 25 March 1881 he married Johanna Heuston, with whom he had three children. He served as a Singleton alderman and then as mayor for seven years. Richard Ryther Steer Bowker (30 August 1815 – 3 April 1903) was an Australian mariner, physician, surgeon and politician. Early life and education Bowker was the son of Thomas Dawson and Elizabeth Steer and born at Campsall, Yorkshire, England. He was awarded diplomas in botany and materia medica in Paris in 1836 and an MD from the University of St Andrews in 1839. He visited Australia in the emigrant ship the ''Shepherd'' and then migrated to Melbourne, Victoria, in the in February 1841. Biography After his parents died in West Prussia from plague, he immigrated at age 13 to America, arriving in New York City. Liverpool Plains was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, created in 1859 and including the Liverpool Plains (which includes Quirindi and Gunnedah) and the extensive pastoral district around the Gwydir River in the northwest of the state. It was created when the seat of Liverpool Plains and Gwydir was divided into two. It was abolished in 1880, and partly replaced by Gunnedah. It was re-created in the 1904 re-distribution of electorates following the 1903 New South Wales referendum, which required the number of members of the Legislative Assembly to be reduced from 125 to 90. Hanley Bennett
Hanley Bennett (1815 – 30 April 1893) was an English-born Australian politician. He was born in Staffordshire and migrated to New South Wales in 1837. He worked as a shoemaker and surveyor, first at Cassilis, then at Muswellbrook from 1843 and at Tamworth from 1855. Around 1843 he married Eliza Watson, with whom he had eight children.
