National Parliament Of Papua New Guinea
The National Parliament of Papua New Guinea is the unicameral national legislature in Papua New Guinea. It was created in 1964 as the House of Assembly of Papua and New Guinea but gained its current name after the nation was granted independence in 1975. The 111 members of parliament serve five-year terms, 89 of whom are chosen from single-member "open" electorates, which are sometimes referred to as "seats" but are officially known as constituencies. The remaining 22 are chosen from single-member provincial electorates: the 20 provinces, the autonomous province of Bougainville (North Solomons), and the National Capital District. Each provincial member becomes governor of their province unless they take a ministerial position, in which case the governorship passes to an open member of the province. Melanesian Alliance Party
The Melanesian Alliance Party is a political party in Papua New Guinea. The party was co-founded by John Momis and John Kaputin in the late 1970s. The party formed an association with the National Alliance Party prior to the 1997 general election, but relaunched as a separate party in February 2002 with three founding National Alliance members: Bernard Narokobi, Sir Moi Avei, and Dame Carol Kidu. Narokobi resumed the leadership, but lost his seat at the 2002 election. It returned three MPs at the 2002 election: Sir Moi Avei (Kairuku-Hiri Open), Anderson Vele (Rigo Open) and Dame Carol Kidu (Moresby South Open). Avei assumed the leadership; however, he was replaced by Kidu in May 2007 after a leadership tribunal recommended Avei's dismissal from office. Finschhafen District
Finschhafen is a district on the north-east coast of the Morobe province of Papua New Guinea. It is named after the port town of the same name, Finschhafen. The port was discovered (for Europeans) in 1884 by the German researcher Otto Finsch. In 1885 the German colony of German New Guinea created a town on the site and named it after the discoverer (''-hafen = -harbor''). Evangelical Lutheran missionaries, organized by Johann Flierl, settled near the town, establishing a Mission station at Simbang, and later at Sattelberg, approximately away. Malaria was the bane of the town from the start. An epidemic in 1891 caused the colonists to briefly leave and only to return and then leave again ten years later in 1901. Other New Guinea towns were favoured instead, especially Rabaul. During the Second World War Finschhafen was fought over by Japan and Australia, along with the United States. Central Province (Papua New Guinea)
Central Province is a province in Papua New Guinea located on the southern coast of the country. It has a population of 237,016 (2010 census) people and is in size. The seat of government of Central Province, which is located within the National Capital District outside the province, is the Port Moresby suburb of Konedobu. On 9 October 2007, the Central Province government announced plans to build a new provincial capital city at Bautama, which lies within Central Province near Port Moresby, although there has been little progress in constructing it. Whereas Tok Pisin is the main lingua franca in all Papua New Guinean towns, in part of the southern mainland coastal area centred on Central Province, Hiri Motu is a stronger lingua franca (but not in Port Moresby). Kairuku-Hiri District is a district of Central Province in Papua New Guinea. It is one of the four administrative districts that make up the province, and surrounds the national capital, Port Moresby. Over half of the population of the Kairuku-Hiri district live in rural communities, and in many areas even basic services are lacking, and public infrastructure including roads, education, health and water supplies are in need of government attention. Papua New Guinea's national government is working on two significant projects that are likely to commence in the Kairuku-Hiri district in the near future, being the Central City project at Bautama near Port Moresby, and the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant at Papa. People's Action Party (Papua New Guinea)
The People's Action Party is a right-of-centre political party in Papua New Guinea. It was founded prior to the 1987 election by former Opposition Leader Ted Diro. At the 2002 election, the party won 5 out of 109 seats in total (with 5% of the vote in total). At the 2007 election, the party won 6 seats. It supported the government of Prime Minister Michael Somare. Moi Avei
Moi Avei KBE (born 24 October 1946) is a Papua New Guinean politician. He was a member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea from 1992 to 2007, representing the Kairuku-Hiri electorate. He was Deputy Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea from 2004 to 2006 under Michael Somare. Avei was born in Boera village in Kairuku-Hiri District, and was educated at Ipswich Grammar School and the University of Queensland in Australia, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Social Work. He was variously PNG's Director of Child Welfare, a political advisor (at various times to Michael Somare, Akoka Doi, and the opposition as a whole), a businessman and a consultant before entering politics. Aside from his stint as Deputy Prime Minister, Avei also served in a number of ministerial portfolios, including Higher Education, Science and Technology, National Planning, Bougainville Affairs and Petroleum and Energy. People's Democratic Movement
The People's Democratic Movement is a political party in Papua New Guinea. It was founded by Paias Wingti in 1985, after his faction left the Pangu Party. Wingti served as prime minister from 1985 to 1988 and from 1992 to 1994. He was later replaced as leader by Mekere Morauta who also served as prime minister during his leadership of the PDM from 1999 to 2002. The party won 13 of 109 seats at the 2002 general election. It became the second largest party in Parliament, but the largest party, the National Alliance Party led by Michael Somare formed the government. The PDM joined the opposition in the National Parliament. Before the 2007 general elections, Morauta lost the leadership of the party and founded his own party, the Papua New Guinea Party, while Wingti became the leader of the PDM again.
