Members Of The 18th Seanad
This is a list of the members of the 18th Seanad Éireann, the upper house of the Oireachtas (legislature) of Ireland. These Senators were elected or appointed in 1987, after the 1987 general election and served until the close of poll for the 19th Seanad in 1989. Composition of the 18th Seanad There are a total of 60 seats in the Seanad. 43 Senators are elected by the Vocational panels, 6 elected by the Universities and 11 are nominated by the Taoiseach. Seanad Éireann
Seanad Éireann (, ; "Senate of Ireland") is the upper house of the Oireachtas (the Irish legislature), which also comprises the President of Ireland and Dáil Éireann (the lower house). It is commonly called the Seanad or Senate and its members senators (''seanadóirí'' in Irish, singular: ''seanadóir''). Unlike Dáil Éireann, it is not directly elected but consists of a mixture of members chosen by various methods. Its powers are much weaker than those of the Dáil and it can only delay laws with which it disagrees, rather than veto them outright. It can introduce new legislation. It has been located, since its establishment, in Leinster House. Fine Gael
Fine Gael (, ; English: "Family (or Tribe) of the Irish") is a liberal-conservative and Christian-democratic political party in Ireland. Fine Gael is currently the third-largest party in the Republic of Ireland in terms of members of Dáil Éireann and largest in terms of Irish members of the European Parliament. The party has a membership of 25,000 in 2021. Leo Varadkar succeeded Enda Kenny as party leader on 2 June 2017 and as Taoiseach on 14 June; Kenny had been leader since 2002, and Taoiseach since 2011. Fine Gael was founded on 8 September 1933 following the merger of its parent party Cumann na nGaedheal, the National Centre Party and the Army Comrades Association. Nuala Fennell
Nuala Fennell (; 25 November 1935 – 11 August 2009) was an Irish Fine Gael politician, economist and activist who served as Minister of State from December 1982 to January 1987 with responsibility for Women's Affairs and Family Law. She served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin South from 1981 to 1987 and 1989 to 1992. She also served as a Senator from 1987 to 1989. Fennell was a leading Women's Rights campaigner in the 1970s when she was part of the Irish Women's Liberation Movement, from which she resigned due to differences of policy in 1971. Fennell was involved in setting up the first refuge for "battered women" in Dublin. She was involved in the 1975 campaign for the right to divorce in Ireland. She was elected at the 1981 general election to the 22nd Dáil, as a Fine Gael TD for Dublin South. Joe Doyle (politician)
Joseph Doyle (27 June 1936 – 8 August 2009) was an Irish Fine Gael politician. He served two terms as a deputy for the Dublin South-East constituency. He served variously as a member of Dublin City Council, Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann, becoming Lord Mayor of Dublin from 1998 to 1999. Political career Doyle, a former sacristan in the local Roman Catholic church in Donnybrook, was first elected to public office at the 1979 local elections, to represent the Pembroke area for Fine Gael on Dublin City Council. He served continually in City Hall from 1979 until his retirement at the 2004 local elections. Between 1998 and 1999 he served as Lord Mayor of Dublin. Séamus Cullimore
Séamus Cullimore (born 22 July 1954) is a former Fianna Fáil politician from County Wexford, Ireland. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) and senator. In 1987 Cullimore was nominated by the Taoiseach, Charles Haughey to the 18th Seanad Éireann. John Connor (Irish Politician)
John Connor (born 14 February 1944) is an Irish former Fine Gael politician. He was elected to Dáil Éireann at the 1981 general election as a Fine Gael Teachta Dála (TD) for the Roscommon constituency. He lost his seat at the February 1982 general election, and was not elected at the November 1982 general election. He was nominated by the Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald to the 17th Seanad in February 1983. He was elected to the Agricultural Panel of the 18th Seanad in 1987. At the 1989 general election he re-gained his Dáil seat for the Roscommon constituency and was re-elected for the new Longford–Roscommon constituency at the 1992 general election. Paul Bradford
Paul Bradford (born 1 December 1963) is a former Irish politician who served as a Senator for the Agricultural Panel from 1987 to 1989 and 2002 to 2016. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cork East constituency from 1989 to 2002. Early and private life Bradford was born in Mourne Abbey near Mallow, County Cork in 1963. He was educated at the Patrician Academy in Mallow. He is married to former Renua Ireland TD Lucinda Creighton. Tony Bromell
Tony Bromell (1932 – 3 January 2017) was an educationist and Fianna Fáil politician from Limerick in Republic of Ireland, Ireland. Born in Limerick in 1932, Bromell been a member of Fianna Fáil all his life, and was a member of Limerick City Council for 17 years, serving as Mayor of Limerick from 1982 to 1983. He was also briefly a Seanad Éireann, senator, after winning a by-election to the 18th Seanad for the Industrial and Commercial Panel on 19 December 1988, following the death of Fine Gael senator Jack Daly (politician), Jack Daly. Bromell was registrar in Mary Immaculate College from 1967 until he retired in 1998. Tras Honan
Tras Honan (; born 4 January 1930) is a former Irish Fianna Fáil politician from Ennis in County Clare who served as a senator for 15 years. She was elected to the position of Cathaoirleach (Chair of Seanad Éireann) on two occasions, becoming the first and only woman elected to the position. She was born in Dublin and educated at St. Leo's Convent, Carlow and at the Mercy Convent, Clonmel. She worked as a housewife and businesswoman before becoming active in politics. In 1977, she was elected to the 14th Seanad as a Fianna Fáil candidate on the Administrative Panel and served for 15 years until her defeat at the 1993 elections to the 20th Seanad. 1989 Irish General Election
The 1989 Irish general election was held on Thursday, 15 June, three weeks after the Dissolution of parliament, dissolution of the Dáil Éireann, Dáil on 25 May. Jack Daly (politician)
Jack Daly (28 May 1915 – 5 May 1988) was a Fine Gael politician from County Kerry in Ireland. For many years he was a member of Seanad Éireann. The founder and managing director of the motor vehicle business ″Killarney Autos″ ( Killarney, County Kerry), Daly was elected to the 13th Seanad on 23 April 1975, at a by-election on the Industrial and Commercial Panel following the death of Senator Denis Farrelly. He was defeated at the 1977 Seanad election, and again at the 1981 election, but was re-elected at the 1982 election to the 16th Seanad. He held the seat until his death in 1988, aged nearly 73. The resulting by-election for his seat in the 18th Seanad was won by the Fianna Fáil candidate Tony Bromell. Cathaoirleach (; Irish for chairperson; plural: ) is the title of the chair (or presiding officer) of Seanad Éireann, the sixty-member upper house of the Oireachtas, the legislature of Ireland.
