Melville Syme
Melville Arthur Syme is a community leader from Kaikōura, New Zealand, who has been involved in a wide range of community groups and activities in the town. Kaikōura Lions Club Syme has been a member of the Kaikōura Lions Clubs International, Lions Club since 1968 and became president after just six years. By 2023, he had been a member of the club for 55 years. He was District Governor from 2001 to 2002. One of the significant projects led by Syme was the construction of a new footbridge over Lyell Creek, after a severe storm, ex- tropical 1974–75 South Pacific cyclone season#Severe Tropical Cyclone Alison, Cyclone Alison, caused extensive damage in Kaikōura in March 1975, and damaged the existing bridge. Julie Syme
Julie Patricia Syme is a community leader from Kaikōura, New Zealand, who has been involved in a wide range of community groups and activities in the town. Lions Club of Seaward Kaikōura Syme was a founding member of the Lions Clubs International, Lions Club of Seaward Kaikōura, incorporated in 1992. She worked to establish the Seaward Kaikōura Lions as a club for women, because at that time, the majority of community service clubs were generally run by men. Symes was the charter President, and has been District Governor. She stood down in 2017, after serving three terms as President. One of the fundraising initiatives led by Syme has been the Trash Fashion show, involving designers presenting garments made from recycled materials. Ngāi Tahu
Ngāi Tahu, or Kāi Tahu, is the principal Māori (tribe) of the South Island. Its (tribal area) is the largest in New Zealand, and extends from the White Bluffs / Te Parinui o Whiti (southeast of Blenheim), Mount Mahanga and Kahurangi Point in the north to Stewart Island / Rakiura in the south. The comprises 18 (governance areas) corresponding to traditional settlements. Ngāi Tahu originated in the Gisborne District of the North Island, along with Ngāti Porou and Ngāti Kahungunu, who all intermarried amongst the local Ngāti Ira. Over time, all but Ngāti Porou would migrate away from the district. Kaikōura Peninsula
The Kaikōura Peninsula is located in the northeast of New Zealand's South Island. It protrudes into the Pacific Ocean. The town of Kaikōura is located on the north shore of the peninsula. The peninsula has been settled by Maori for approximately 1000 years, and by Europeans since the 1800s, when whaling operations began off the Kaikōura Coast. Since the end of whaling in 1922 whales have been allowed to thrive and the region is now a popular whale watching destination. Queen's Service Medal
The Queen's Service Medal is a medal awarded by the government of New Zealand to recognise and reward volunteer service to the community and also public service in elected or appointed public office. It was established in 1975 and is related to the Queen's Service Order. The QSM replaced the Imperial Service Medal as an award of New Zealand. Appearance 1975–2007 The original medal was made of sterling silver, in diameter. The obverse bears the same effigy of The Queen as the badge of the Queen's Service Order. Kaikōura () is a town on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located on State Highway 1, 180 km north of Christchurch.
