Melville Bull
Melville Bull (September 29, 1854 – July 5, 1909) was a U.S. Representative from Rhode Island. Born in Newport, Rhode Island, Bull attended Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, New Hampshire, and graduated from Harvard University in 1877. He was then involved in farming in the vicinity of Newport. He served as member of the State house of representatives from 1883 to 1885 and as a state senator from 1885 to 1892. He served as member of the Republican State central committee and served as delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1888. He also served as Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island from 1892 to 1894 under Governor D. Russell Brown. Bull was a charter member of the Rhode Island Society of Colonial Wars in 1897. Bull was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1895 to March 3, 1903). The Society of Colonial Wars is a hereditary society composed of men who trace their descents from forebears who, in military, naval, or civil positions of high trust and responsibility, by acts or counsel, assisted in the establishment, defense, and preservation of the mainland American colonies of Great Britain. General information The General Society presently comprises some thirty-two constituent state societies. The organization was founded in New York in 1892, originally as a state society. The General Society was founded in 1893. The total membership of state societies has for many years remained in the range of 4,000 to 4,500. Island Cemetery
The Common Burying Ground and Island Cemetery are a pair of separate cemeteries on Farewell and Warner Street in Newport, Rhode Island. Together they contain over 5,000 graves, including a colonial-era slave cemetery and Jewish graves. The pair of cemeteries was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a single listing in 1974. History The Common Burial Ground was established in 1640 on land given to city of Newport by John Clarke. It features what is probably the largest number of colonial era headstones in a single cemetery, including the largest number of colonial African American headstones in the United States. The predominantly African-American northern section of the cemetery is commonly referred to by local African-Americans as "God's Little Acre".
