Melolonthidae
Melolonthinae is a subfamily of the scarab beetles (family Scarabaeidae). It is a very diverse group; distributed over most of the world, it contains over 11,000 species in over 750 genera. Some authors include the scarab subfamilies Euchirinae and Pachypodinae as tribes in the Melolonthinae. Unlike some of their relatives, their habitus is usually not bizarre. They resemble the Rutelinae in being fairly plesiomorphic in outward appearance. Like in many Scarabaeidae, males have large fingered antennae, while those of the females are smaller and somewhat knobby. In the Melolonthinae, this sexual dimorphism is particularly pronounced. Many species have striking – though rarely brilliant or iridescent – hues and bold patterns of hairs. Being often quite sizeable and swarming in numbers at certain times, for example the ''Amphimallon'', ''Phyllophaga'' and ''Polyphylla'' " june beetles" or the '' Melolontha'' cockchafers – all from tribe Melolonthini – fea ...

Pest (organism)
A pest is any animal or plant harmful to humans or human concerns. The term is particularly used for creatures that damage crops, livestock, and forestry or cause a nuisance to people, especially in their homes. Humans have modified the environment for their own purposes and are intolerant of other creatures occupying the same space when their activities impact adversely on human objectives. Thus, an elephant is unobjectionable in its natural habitat but a pest when it tramples crops. Some animals are disliked because they bite or sting; snake Snakes are elongated, Limbless vertebrate, limbless, carnivore, carnivorous reptiles of the suborder Serpentes . Cockchafer
The cockchafer, colloquially called Maybug, Maybeetle, or doodlebug, is the name given to any of the European beetles of the genus ''Melolontha'', in the family Scarabaeidae. Once abundant throughout Europe and a major pest in the periodical years of "mass flight", it had been nearly eradicated in the middle of the 20th century through the agricultural intensification and has even been locally exterminated in many regions. However, since pest control was increasingly regulated in the 1980s, its numbers have started to grow again. Taxonomy There are three species of European cockchafers: *The common cockchafer, ''Melolontha melolontha'' *The forest cockchafer, ''Melolontha hippocastani'' *The large cockchafer, ''Melolontha pectoralis'', rarer and less widespread than the other two species. Description Imago, Adults of the common cockchafer reach sizes of 25–30 mm; the forest cockchafer is a little smaller (20–25 mm). The two species can best be distinguished by th ...

Melolontha
''Melolontha'' is a genus of beetles in the family Scarabaeidae. The European cockchafers belong to this genus. Taxonomy Linnaeus called the European cockchafer ''Scarabaeus melolontha''. Étienne Louis Geoffroy used ''Melolontha'' as a genus name (1762), but his book has been suppressed by the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature, and the authority for the name is the later (1775) publication by Johan Christian Fabricius. Species The following is a list of species within the genus ''Melolontha'': *'' Melolontha aceris'' Faldermann, 1835 *''Melolontha afflicta'' Ballion, 1870 *''Melolontha albida'' Frivaldszky, 1835 *''Melolontha anita'' Reitter, 1902 *''Melolontha argus'' Burmeister 1855 *''Melolontha bifurcata'' (Brenske, 1896) *''Melolontha chinensis'' ( Guerin, 1838) *''Melolontha ciliciensis'' Petrovitz *''Melolontha flabellata'' Sharp, 1876 *''Melolontha frater'' Arrow, 1913 – Indonesia *''Melolontha fuscotestacea'' Kraatz, 1887 *''Melolontha gutti ...
