Melodian Records
Melodian Records was an Australian independent record label founded in 1988 by record producer and music journalist Ian Meldrum with Michael Gudinski and Amanda Pelman. The name ''Melodian'' is a combination of 'melody' and Meldrum and Ian. Background In July 1987, Australian music television show ''Countdown'' ended. Meldrum had hosted the show since its induction in 1974. Meldrum wanted to start a record label as he felt "so many young pop acts weren't getting a go". The first two signings were Indecent Obsession (a pop band from the Gold Coast) and Roxus (a rock band from Melbourne). The first album released on the label was Indecent Obsession's '' Spoken Words'' in November 1989. It peaked in Australia at number 28. Ian Meldrum
Ian Alexander "Molly" Meldrum AM (born 29 January 1943) is an Australian music critic, journalist, record producer and musical entrepreneur. He was the talent co-ordinator, on-air interviewer, and music news presenter on the former popular music program ''Countdown'' (1974–87) and is widely recognised for his trademark Stetson hat, which he has regularly worn in public since the 1980s (it is commonly mistaken for an Akubra). Meldrum has featured on the Australian music scene since the mid-1960s, first with his writing for ''Go-Set'' (1966–74), a weekly teen newspaper, then during his tenure with ''Countdown'' and subsequent media contributions. As a record producer he worked on top ten hits for Russell Morris ("The Real Thing", "Part Three into Paper Walls", both 1969), Ronnie Burns ("Smiley", 1970), Colleen Hewett (" Day by Day", 1971), Supernaut ("I Like It Both Ways", 1976) and The Ferrets ("Don't Fall in Love", 1977). Roxus
Roxus were an Australian hard rock band which existed between 1987 and 1993. Members included Juno Roxas - lead vocals, Dragan Stanić - guitar, Darren Danielson - drums, John 'Stones' Nixon - bass guitar and Andy Shanahan - keyboards. Their debut album, '' Nightstreet'' was released in August 1991 and peaked at No. 5 on the ARIA Albums Chart. Their most successful single, " Where Are You Now?", reached No. 13 on the ARIA Singles Chart and was certified gold. Juno Roxas
Juno Roxas (born 4 May 1967) is an Australian musician and actor. Life and career Roxas was one of the founding members of glam metal band, Roxus (1987–1993). The group released an album in 1991, titled '' Nightstreet'' which peaked at number 5 on the ARIA charts. In 1989, Roxas starred in the Australian AFI award nominated feature film, ''Mull'' and recorded versions of " The Wanderer", "Jingle Bell Rock" and "All Right Now" for the film's soundtrack. Roxas launched his solo career in 1993 on the Melodian label with the single "Almost Summer" and album, ''Far From Here'' 1994. Neither impacted on the ARIA chart. In 1998 Roxas appeared on the Mushroom Records 25th anniversary album, '' Mushroom 25 Live: The Concert of the Century'', and played the accompanying concert performing "Where Are You Now?". Indecent Obsession (also seen as Obsession) were an Australian pop rock band formed early in 1987 in Brisbane with founding mainstays Daryl Sims on drums and Michael Szumowski on keyboards. By 1988 the line-up also included Andrew Coyne on lead guitar and David Dixon on lead vocals. They released three studio albums, '' Spoken Words'' (November 1989) and ''Indio'' (August 1992), both reached the top 50 on the ARIA Albums Chart. Michael Gudinski
Michael Solomon Gudinski AM (22 August 1952 – 2 March 2021) was an Australian record executive and promoter who was a leading figure in the Australian music industry. Born and raised in Melbourne to Jewish Russian immigrants, Gudinski formed the highly successful Australian record company Mushroom Records in 1972 through which he signed several generations of Australian musicians and performers ranging from MacKenzie Theory, the Skyhooks, The Choirboys, Kylie Minogue, and New Zealand's Split Enz to newer artists such as Eskimo Joe, Evermore and others. Gudinski was considered to be "one of the most significant and powerful players" in the Australian music landscape. ''Countdown'' was a weekly Australian music television program that was broadcast by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation from 8 November 1974 until 19 July 1987. It was created by Executive Producer Michael Shrimpton, producer/director Robbie Weekes and record producer and music journalist Ian "Molly" Meldrum.
