Melinda Copp
Melinda Copp (born July 7, 1962), later known by her married name Melinda Harrison, is a former competitive swimmer from Canada. A native of London, Ontario, she attended the University of Michigan where she was the women's captain of the Michigan Wolverines swimming and diving team. She swam the backstroke and individual medley for Michigan, won four Big Ten Conference championships. She was also selected as an All-American swimmer in four events—the 100-yard backstroke, 400-yard individual medley, 200-yard individual medley, and as a member of the 400-yard medley relay team. At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, she became the first Michigan Wolverines women's varsity swimmer to compete in the Olympics, representing Canada in the 200-meter backstroke. She was inducted into the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor in 2006; she was the first woman swimmer to receive the honor. Backstroke
Backstroke or back crawl is one of the four Swimming (sport), swimming styles used in competitive events regulated by FINA, and the only one of these styles swum on the back. This swimming style has the advantage of easy breathing, but the disadvantage of swimmers not being able to see where they are going. It also has a different start from the other three competition swimming styles. The swimming style is similar to an ''upside down'' front crawl or freestyle. Both backstroke and front crawl are long-axis strokes. In individual medley backstroke is the second style swum; in the medley relay it is the first style swum. The 1984 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the XXIII Olympiad and also known as Los Angeles 1984) were an international multi-sport event held from July 28 to August 12, 1984, in Los Angeles, California, United States. It marked the second time that Los Angeles had hosted the Games, the first being in 1932. California was the home state of the incumbent U.S. President Ronald Reagan, who officially opened the Games.
