Melina Laboucan-Massimo
Melina Laboucan-Massimo (born 1981) is a climate justice and Indigenous rights advocate from the Lubicon Cree community of Little Buffalo in northern Alberta, Canada. Growing up with firsthand experience of the effects of oil and gas drilling on local communities, she began advocating for an end to resource extraction in Indigenous territories but shifted focus to supporting a renewable energy transition after a ruptured pipeline spilled approximately 4.5 million litres of oil near Little Buffalo in 2011. Laboucan-Massimo is a former campaigner with Greenpeace. She is the founder of Sacred Earth Solar and co-founder of Indigenous Climate Action, which support Indigenous-led clean energy and climate action projects in Canada. From 2010 to 2014, she co-organized the annual Tar Sands Healing Walk in Alberta, and in 2015 she helped construct a 20.8-kilowatt solar panel installation to power the local health centre in Little Buffalo. Peace River, Alberta
Peace River, originally named Peace River Crossing and known as in French, is a town in northwest Alberta, Canada. It is along the banks of the Peace River at its confluence with the Smoky River, the Heart River and Pat's Creek. It is approximately northwest of Edmonton and northeast of Grande Prairie on Highway 2. It was known as the Village of Peace River Crossing between 1914 and 1916. The Peace River townsite is nearly below the relatively flat terrain surrounding it. Pat's Creek used to be an open channel through the town but is now channelled through a culvert under the town streets, re-emerging at the mouth on the Peace River at the Riverfront Park. The population in the Town of Peace River was 6,729 in 2011, a 6.6% increase over its 2006 population. The Trans Mountain Pipeline System, or simply the Trans Mountain Pipeline, is a Pipeline transport, pipeline that carries Petroleum, crude and Petroleum product, refined oil from Alberta to the British Columbia Coast, coast of British Columbia, Canada. The pipeline is currently owned by the Government of Canada through Trans Mountain Corporation, a subsidiary of the federal Crown corporations of Canada, Crown corporation Canada Development Investment Corporation (CDEV). The Secwépemc ( ; Secwepemc: or ), known in English as the Shuswap people , are a First Nations people residing in the interior of the Canadian province of British Columbia. They speak one of the Salishan languages, known as Secwepemc or Shuswap. Secwepemcúĺecw, their territory, ranges from the eastern Chilcotin Plateau and the Cariboo Plateau southeast through Thompson Country to Kamloops and Shuswap Country. The Keystone Pipeline System is an oil pipeline system in Canada and the United States, commissioned in 2010 and owned by TC Energy and as of 31 March 2020 the Government of Alberta. It runs from the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin in Alberta to refineries in Illinois and Texas, and also to oil tank farms and an oil pipeline distribution center in Cushing, Oklahoma.
