Melicertus Plebejus
The eastern king prawn is an edible dendrobranch prawn endemic to eastern Australia. Its scientific name is ''Melicertus plebejus'' or ''Penaeus plebejus''. It is caught by commercial and recreational fishers for human food. Names Eastern king prawns are marketed in eastern Australia as "king prawns" without qualification. In southeast Queensland, they may also be called Mooloolabah prawns. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) uses French and Spanish names that are direct translations of "eastern royal prawn": , . The FAO English name is "Eastern king prawn". Taxonomy and systematics The species was first formally described by Wilhelm Hess in 1865, named ''Penaeus plebejus'' (type locality Sydney). It was also described as ''Penaeus canaliculatus'' var. ''australiensis'' by Charles Spence Bate (1888). Waldo L. Schmitt (1926) described a separate species ''Penaeus maccullochi'' that was said to differ from ''P. plebejus'' in the nature of it carapace ...

Melicertus Kerathurus
''Melicertus kerathurus'', the striped prawn or caramote prawn is a species of tiger prawn from the family Penaeidae which occurs in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea which is an important species in commercial fisheries. It is the type species for the genus ''Melicertus''. Description ''Melicertus kerathurus'' is a large shrimp, which has a body with an amber tint and a laterally compressed shell. There are 5 pairs of thin legs while the blue tail is often lined with red. The average length of males is 110 to 140 mm while females are 130 to 170 mm, but the females can grow up to 225mm. Distribution ''Melicertus kerathurus'' is found in the warmer water of the eastern Atlantic from the south coast of England to Angola and throughout the entire Mediterranean Sea. Biology ''Melicertus kerathurus'' occurs coastal marine or brackish waters with muddy-sand or sand substrates. Penaeus
''Penaeus'' is a genus of prawns, including the giant tiger prawn (''P. monodon''), the most important species of farmed crustacean worldwide. The genus has been reorganised following a proposition of Pérez Farfante and Kensley based on morphological differences, in particular the genital characteristics of these animals, although this revision has not been universally accepted. Following the revision, many species formerly in the genus ''Penaeus'' have been reassigned to new genera in the family Penaeidae: ''Farfantepenaeus'', '' Fenneropenaeus'', ''Litopenaeus'' and ''Marsupenaeus''. The following table gives an overview: A few more species that are sometimes given as ''Penaeus'' spp. are actually assigned to the genus ''Melicertus ''Melicertus'' is a genus of "king" prawns, comprising eight species which were previously classified as members of the genus ''Penaeus'': *''Melicertus canaliculatus'' (Olivier, 1811) - witch prawn *''Melicertus hathor'' (Burkenroad, 1959) ...

Penaeidae
Penaeidae is a family of marine crustaceans in the suborder Dendrobranchiata, which are often referred to as penaeid shrimp or penaeid prawns. The Penaeidae contain many species of economic importance, such as the tiger prawn, whiteleg shrimp, Atlantic white shrimp, and Indian prawn. Many prawns are the subject of commercial fishery, and farming, both in marine settings, and in freshwater farms. Lateral line–like sense organs on the antennae have been reported in some species of Penaeidae. At , the myelinated giant interneurons of pelagic penaeid shrimp have the world record for impulse conduction speed in any animal. Genera Of the 48 recognised genera in the family Penaeidae, 23 are known only from the fossil record (marked †): * † '' Albertoppelia'' Schweigert & Garassino, 2004 * † ''Ambilobeia'' Garassino & Pasini, 2002 * † ''Antrimpos'' Münster, 1839 * '' Artemesia'' Bate, 1888 * '' Atypopenaeus'' Alcock, 1905 * † '' Bombur'' Münster, 1839 * † ''Bylgia'' ...

Constantine Samuel Rafinesque
Constantine Samuel Rafinesque-Schmaltz (; October 22, 1783September 18, 1840) was a French 19th-century polymath born near Constantinople in the Ottoman Empire and self-educated in France. He traveled as a young man in the United States, ultimately settling in Ohio in 1815, where he made notable contributions to botany, zoology, and the study of prehistoric earthworks in North America. He also contributed to the study of ancient Mesoamerican linguistics, in addition to work he had already completed in Europe. Rafinesque was an eccentric and erratic genius. He was an autodidact, who excelled in various fields of knowledge, as a zoologist, botanist, writer and polyglot. He wrote prolifically on such diverse topics as anthropology, biology, geology, and linguistics, but was honored in none of these fields during his lifetime. Indeed, he was an outcast in the American scientific community whose submissions were rejected automatically by leading journals. Among his theories were th ...

Crustaceans Of Australia
Crustaceans (Crustacea, ) form a large, diverse arthropod taxon which includes such animals as decapods, seed shrimp, branchiopods, fish lice, krill, remipedes, isopods, barnacles, copepods, amphipods and mantis shrimp. The crustacean group can be treated as a subphylum under the clade Mandibulata. It is now well accepted that the hexapods emerged deep in the Crustacean group, with the completed group referred to as Pancrustacea. Some crustaceans (Remipedia, Cephalocarida, Branchiopoda) are more closely related to insects and the other hexapods than they are to certain other crustaceans. The 67,000 described species range in size from '' Stygotantulus stocki'' at , to the Japanese spider crab with a leg span of up to and a mass of . Like other arthropods, crustaceans have an exoskeleton, which they moult to grow. They are distinguished from other groups of arthropods, such as insects, myriapods and chelicerates, by the possession of biramous (two-parted) limbs, and by ...
