The Melges 14 is an American Planing (boat), planing sailboat that was designed by Reichel/Pugh as a one-design Sailing (sport), racer and first built in 2016. The design was named ''Sailing World'' magazine's "Best Dinghy" of 2016. Production The design has been built by Melges Performance Sailboats in the United States since 2016 and remains in production. Design The Melges 14 is a racing sailing dinghy, built predominantly of PVC-cored fiberglass. It is raced with one sailor but can carry two adults. It has a catboat rig with a carbon fiber, two-piece mast and single-piece boom (sailing), boom. The sail is made from Mylar. Reichel/Pugh
Reichel/Pugh is a yacht design company based in San Diego, California, United States. It is led by John Reichel and Jim Pugh. Since the late 1990s, Reichel/Pugh-designed yachts have successfully competed in many major races, including the America's Cup. Their designs currently hold the course records for a number of the best-known yacht races, such as the Sydney-Hobart race. Several Reichel/Pugh-designed yachts are in series production, including modern Melges boats such as the Melges 15, Melges 17, Melges 20, Melges 24, Melges 30 (currently out of production), and the Melges 32.
