Melchor Cob Castro
Melchor Cob Castro (born 18 April 1968 in Chiná, Campeche, Mexico) is a Mexican former professional boxer in the light flyweight (108 lb) division. Pro career Cob Castro turned pro in 1986 and captured the WBC light flyweight title in 1991 with a TKO win over Rolando Pascua. He lost the belt in his first defense to Humberto González later that year by decision. In 1992 he lost a rematch to Gonzalez, also by decision. In 1997 he captured the WBO light flyweight title with a decision win over Jesus Chong, but again lost the belt in his first defense to Juan Domingo Córdoba. In 2004 he took on Jorge Arce for the WBC light flyweight title, and was knocked out for the first time in his career in the 5th round. Light flyweight, also known as junior flyweight or super strawweight, is a weight class in boxing. Professional boxing The weight limit at light flyweight in professional boxing is 108 pounds (49 kilograms). When New York legalized boxing in 1920, the law stipulated a "junior flyweight" class, with a weight limit of 99 pounds. When the National Boxing Association was formed in 1921, it also recognized this weight class. However, on January 19, 1922, the NBA decided to withdraw recognition of the junior flyweight division. On December 31, 1929, the New York State Athletic Commission also abolished the junior flyweight class. No champion had been crowned in this division prior to its abolition. The World Boxing Council (WBC) decided to resurrect this division in the 1970s. The first champion in this division was Franco Udella, who won the WBC title in 1975. Jesús Alberto Chong (born 7 January 1965) is a Mexican former professional boxer. He is a former Mexican National, NABF, and the WBO Light Flyweight Champion. Professional career Chong, who is of Chinese Mexican heritage, made his professional debut on September 1, 1987. In just his 11th fight in 1990, he lost a close eight-round decision to future five-time champion Johnny Tapia. Later in that same year he won his first world title, the International Boxing Council (IBC) Championship against Francisco Montiel. In 1991, he lost to five-time champion Michael Carbajal by unanimous decision. NABF Light Flyweight title In September 1992 he beat Porfirio Danny Núnez to defend his NABF Light Flyweight Championship, that he won by beating Francisco Montiel in a rematch earlier that year.
