Melbourne Jazz Co-operative
The Melbourne Jazz Co-operative, better known as the Melbourne Jazz Co-op runs two jazz concerts a week in Melbourne, and is the most active jazz presenter organisation in Australia. The organisation was founded by Martin Jackson, pianist Jamie Fielding, bassist Barry Buckley and others in late 1982 with the intention of presenting as wide a range of jazz styles as on offer in Melbourne at the time. Jamie Fielding (musician)
Jamie Fielding (1960–1993) was an Australian pianist, composer, and experimental musician. Fielding began his music career as a jazz musician, but later became interested in electronic music, working extensively with a Yamaha DX-7 synthesiser. He performed in Michael Sheridan's Slaughter House 3 ensemble, and with various Sydney musicians, such as pianist Chris Abrahams. Fielding died in a train accident, aged 32. In 1991 Fielding had recorded the ''Extinkt'' LP, with Guy Maddison (bass, trombone), Sybilla (vocals), Peter Harvey (drums), Jon Evans (tapes), Michael Sheridan (guitar), and John Murphy (synth). The CD was released posthumously on the Dr Jims label. A triple CD overview of Fielding's music, ''Notes From The Underground'' was compiled by Michael Sheridan and Martin Jackson, and released on the Australian Independent Jazz Artist label. Montsalvat International Festival Of Jazz
Montsalvat is an artists' colony in Eltham, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Established by Justus Jorgensen in 1934, the colony is set among gardens on five hectares (12 acres) of land, and is home to dozens of buildings, including houses, halls, studios, galleries and stables. All of Montsalvat's buildings were designed and built by residents using materials from a variety of sources, including Victorian era buildings then being demolished in the city centre. The grounds and buildings are currently used for exhibitions, performances, conferences, seminars, weddings and receptions; however, artists working in a variety of mediums continue to reside in Montsalvat. Several classes on various disciplines of art are offered year round by the resident artists. Mike Nock
Michael Anthony Nock (born 27 September 1940) is a New Zealand jazz pianist, currently based in Australia. Biography He was born in Christchurch, New Zealand. Nock began studying piano at 11. He attended Nelson College for one term in 1955.''Nelson College Old Boys' Register, 1856–2006'', 6th edition By the age of 18, he was performing in Australia. In Sydney he played in The Three Out trio with Freddy Logan and Chris Karan who toured England in 1961 before Nock left to attend Berklee College of Music. He was a member of Yusef Lateef's group from 1963 to 1965. During 1968–1970, Nock was involved with fusion, leading the Fourth Way band. After a few years he became a studio musician in New York (1975–1985) and then returned to Australia. Allan Browne
Allan Vincent Browne (28 July 1944 – 13 June 2015) was an Australian jazz drummer and composer first known for his work in The Red Onion Jazz Band in the 1960s. Browne won the ARIA Award for Best Jazz Album in ARIA Music Awards of 1990 and ARIA Music Awards of 1996 with Paul Grabowsky Trio. Browne was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2013 for service to music as a jazz musician, and to the community. Marc Hannaford
Marc Hannaford is an Australian jazz pianist. He was nominated for the ARIA Award for Best Jazz Album at the ARIA Music Awards of 2011 and at the AIR Awards of 2011 for ''Shreveport Stomp'' in 2011. He was part of The Antripodean Collective with whom they released three albums. Hannaford won the 2013 Music Council of Australia's Freedman Fellowship, the 2013 Jazz “Bell” award for most original album (''Sarcophile''), and the 2013 Australian Performing Rights Association’s Art Award for best work (“Anda Two”). Hannaford completed a PhD in Music Theory at Columbia University in 2019, with a dissertation on the improviser, composer, and cofounder of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, Muhal Richard Abrams. Eugene Ball (born 12 October 1972) is an Australian jazz trumpeter. He won the Best Australian Jazz Composition Award for "Fool Poet's Portion" at the Australian Jazz Bell Awards in 2008. ''Fool Poet's Portion'' is inspired by Norse mythology with three movements: ''The Death of Baldr'', ''Trickster's Intent'', and ''The Coming of Christianity''. It is performed by the Bennetts Lane Big Band which was assembled by Ball, Andrea Keller, and Nick Haywood in 2001 as a large ensemble and as a vehicle for original new work.
