Melbourne Continuation School
The Melbourne Continuation School was Victoria's first state secondary school, established in 1905, from the initiative of Director of Education, Frank Tate. The school was founded on the old National Model School in Spring Street, with principal Joseph Hocking. The opening of the school marked the beginning of secondary state education in Victoria. The school site is now occupied by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Secondary state education State secondary education was co-educational and secular. "Continuation" was used to name the school to bypass legal blockages of secondary state education in Victoria. Criticisms of the school were that it was to be secular, and it would not be single-sex. However, the idea was supported in a very short time, and was renamed to Melbourne High School in 1912. By 1914, the school was reaching overcapacity. Frank Tate (educator)
Frank Tate (18 June 1864 – 28 June 1939) was an Australian educationist who is best remembered for his efforts in expanding secondary education in Victoria, Australia. Early life Tate was born at Mopoke Gully, near Castlemaine, Victoria, the son of Aristides Franklin (usually called Henry) Tate, a storekeeper, and his wife Mary Bessy, ''née'' Lomas, both English born. Frank Tate was educated at the Castlemaine State School, the Old Model School, Melbourne, and the University of Melbourne (B.A., 1888; M.A., 1894). Tate entered the teachers' training college in 1883 and gained the trained teacher's certificate with first and second honours. His first charge was a small school near East Kew on the outskirts of Melbourne. He quickly made an impression as an able and stimulating young teacher and many students were sent to his school for teaching experience. Spring Street, Melbourne
Spring Street is a major street in the central business district of Melbourne, Australia. It runs roughly north-south and is the easternmost street in the original 1837 Hoddle Grid. Ellen Balaam
Ellen Balaam (1891–1985) was an Australian physician and the first woman surgeon in Melbourne. Early life and education Ellen Maud Balaam was born on 30 November 1891 in Melbourne, Victoria to Harry and Ellen Balaam. Inspired at a young age to pursue a medical career, she attended Melbourne Continuation School (later MacRobertson's Girls High School) from 1906-1908 where she won a scholarship at the end of primary school to continue her schooling at high school. She won a further scholarship to attend university, and enrolled in medicine at the University of Melbourne. She taught mathematics at a public school in order to supplement this scholarship.
