The Melbourne Whalers are an Australian junior ice hockey team based in Melbourne, Victoria playing in the Australian Junior Ice Hockey League. They represent one of the two junior ice hockey teams from Victoria currently playing in the AJIHL, which is the most elite level for ice hockey at a national level for ages between 16–20 years old. History AJIHL The Melbourne Blackhawks were founded 18 September 2012 following the announcement by Ice Hockey Australia of the formation of the Australian Junior Ice Hockey League. The team is controlled by the Victorian Ice Hockey Association. On 14 October 2012 it was announced that former Australian player Doug Stevenson had signed on as coach for the 2012–13 AJIHL season. The Melbourne Blackhawks played the first ever AJIHL game against the Sydney Lightning at the Medibank Icehouse on 21 October 2012. The Blackhawks defeated the Lightning by a score of 5-3. Australian Junior Ice Hockey League
The Australian Junior Ice Hockey League (AJIHL) is an elite amateur national ice hockey league in Australia, open to players 20 years of age or younger. History The Australian Junior Ice Hockey League was first announced on 18 September 2012 by Ice Hockey Australia. The inaugural season consisted of four teams – Melbourne Blackhawks, Melbourne Red Wings, Sydney Lightning and the Sydney Maple Leafs, with teams being operated by their respective state governing body. The first season started on 20 October 2012 at the Medibank Icehouse in Melbourne and ran until March 2013 with the finals to be held on 9 and 10 March 2013. The Sydney Maple Leafs won the inaugural AJIHL finals after beating the Melbourne Red Wings in a tie-breaking sudden overtime period after the teams leveled the two game series. The 2014–15 AJIHL season is the third season of the Australian Junior Ice Hockey League. It ran from 4 October 2014 until 21 February 2015, with the finals running from 28 February 2015 until 1 March 2015. The AJIHL is the highest Australian national junior ice hockey competition. League business The regular season began on 4 October 2014 and ran through to 21 February 2015 before the teams competed in the playoff series. The Perth Pelicans and Perth Sharks had a game cancelled, 15 November 2014 which was never rescheduled meaning both teams finished the season a game short of the other teams. 2013–14 AJIHL Season
The 2013–14 AJIHL season is the second season of the Australian Junior Ice Hockey League. It ran from 5 October 2013 until 1 March 2014, with the finals running from 8 March 2014 until 9 March 2014. The AJIHL is the highest Australian national junior ice hockey competition. League business On August 22, 2013, it was announced that the Melbourne Red Wings would change their name to the Melbourne Glaciers and the Melbourne Blackhawks would be renamed the Melbourne Whalers, which avoided the close resemblance with the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks of the NHL after the NHL had concerns over breaches of copyright and this allowed the team to develop its own brand identity. 2015–16 AJIHL Season
The 2015–16 AJIHL season is the fourth season of the Australian Junior Ice Hockey League. It ran from 29 October 2015 until 21 February 2016, with the finals running from 27 February 2016 until 28 February 2016. The AJIHL is the highest Australian national junior ice hockey competition. League business Ice Hockey Australia made the announcement that the Australian Junior Ice Hockey League would be expanding in the 2015–16 season. It planned to include teams from Queensland, South Australia and Australian Capital Territory. This did not happen, however, and the league remains at 6 teams. On 21 January it was announced that an "AJIHL Tier 2" tournament would take place, involving a state team representing Queensland, Australian Capital Territory and South Australia. The Melbourne Glaciers are an Australian junior ice hockey team based in Melbourne, Victoria playing in the Australian Junior Ice Hockey League.
