Melanie Tait
Melanie Tait is an Australian playwright and author. She is from Robertson, New South Wales. Career At 20 years of age she wrote the ''The Vegemite Tales'', which played in London over seven years from 2001 to 2007, including two years on the West End. The play focused on a group of young adults living in a London flat. During her five years in London, she was also the artistic director of the Old Red Lion Theatrebr> After a career in broadcasting at the ABC, she returned to playwriting with 2019's '' The Appleton Ladies' Potato Race'' at Ensemble Theatre, which has since been performed widely. Tait wrote the screenplay for the Paramount+ film adaptation. Her third play ''A Broadcast Coup'' premiered At Ensemble Theatre as part of Sydney Festival in January 2023. She was the co-host and co-creator of ''A Country Podcast''. Robertson, New South Wales
Robertson is a town in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia, in Wingecarribee Shire. The town is located on the edge of an elevated plateau (the Illawarra escarpment) about from the coast. Robertson is known for its high annual rainfall and fertile soil. It was previously covered by an extensive temperate rainforest, most of which has been cleared for farming though remnants such as Robertson Nature Reserve still exist. The town is colloquially known as "Robbo" by the locals. The town is surrounded by lush pasture used for beef and dairy production. It was once famous for cheese production; its distance from, and poor transport to, the Sydney markets meant that in the early days fresh milk was not a viable industry and so the key dairy industries were butter and cheese. The Vegemite Tales
''The Vegemite Tales'' is a comedy theatrical production written by Australian playwright Melanie Tait. The play revolves around the lives of a group of young antipodeans sharing a flat in Hammersmith, west London. It has been described as an Australian stage version of '' Friends''. The name is taken from the iconic Australian food paste, Vegemite. Background ''The Vegemite Tales'' was first staged at The Curtain's Up, a small fringe theatre in west London in 2001. It was an overnight sell-out, finding enormous popularity with London's Australian, New Zealand and South African communities. Contemporary themes include living in a shared house, living in a city far away from home, dealing with different cultures and making the difficult decision to stop putting real life on hold and move back home. The Old Red Lion is a pub and fringe theatre, at Angel, London, Angel, in the London Borough of Islington. The theatre was founded in 1979 as the Old Red Lion Theatre Club. The pub was listed building, Grade II listed in 1994 by Historic England. The Appleton Ladies' Potato Race
''The Appleton Ladies' Potato Race'' is a 2023 Australian feature film based on the stage play of the same name by Australian playwright and journalist Melanie Tait. The film premiered in Australia on Network Ten and was released on streaming on Paramount+ Australia. Plot Doctor Penny Anderson moves from Sydney to her childhood home of Appleton. While visiting the hair salon of her sister Nikki, Penny sees a flyer advertising The Appleton Show and its famous potato race. She discovers the men's first prize pays out $2,000 and the winning woman's prize is only $200. Penny leads a protest which causes turmoil in Appleton, particularly with Nikki, who is the current champion.
