Melancthon EcoPower Centre
The Amaranth Wind Farm, also known as the ''Melancthon EcoPower Centre'', is a 199.5 megawatt (MW) wind farm in Amaranth and Melancthon Township, near Shelburne, Ontario. The centre is owned and operated by TransAlta and at the time of opening, was Canada's largest wind energy installation. Construction of the Melancthon EcoPower Centre began with the 67.5 MW Phase I in 2005 and achieved commercial operation in March 2006. Construction of the 132 MW Phase II of the project began in 2007 and achieved full commercial operation in November 2008. Amaranth, Ontario
Amaranth is a township located in Dufferin County, Ontario, Canada, with a Canada 2011 Census, 2011 population of 3,963. It is Amaranth, named after the plant which grows abundantly within its borders. It is bordered by Mono, Ontario, Mono to the east and East Luther, Ontario, East Luther to the west. The hamlet of Laurel is located on the 5th Line (or County Road 12) and 10th Sideroad (or County Road 10). Laurelwoods Elementary School is located just outside this community, on the 6th Line and 10th Sideroad. The township building is also at this location, and has a park with baseball diamonds and soccer fields on its property. Amaranth's system of naming roads is similar to that of the Dufferin County townships of Mono and Mulmur, and the Simcoe County townships of Adjala and Tosorontio. Melancthon, Ontario
Melancthon is a rural Canadian township in the northwest corner of Dufferin County, Ontario, bordered on the east by Mulmur Township, Amaranth Township and East Luther Grand Valley to the south, Southgate Township to the west, and the Municipality of Grey Highlands to the north. The township does not include the town of Shelburne on its southern border. It has one of the lowest population densities in southwestern Ontario. The primary industry of the township is farming, with limited beef, dairy, sheep and horse farming. It is also home to the Melancthon EcoPower Centre wind farm. Shelburne (2016 population 8,126) is a town in Dufferin County, Ontario, Canada, is located at the intersection of Highway 10 and Highway 89. Shelburne hosts the Annual Canadian Championship Old Time Fiddling Contest that is held each August. History In the early 1860s, the founder of the town Shelburne, William Jelly, found his way through the bushes to choice lots in Melancthon and built several cabins in the area. As Melancthon began developing in the late 1840s, the construction of the Toronto-Sydenham Road (now Highway 10) began and led to settlers moving into the Shelburne area in the 1860s. In 1865, William Jelly established the British Canadian Hotel. A post office was built shortly after, named after the Earl of Shelburne. This is a list of operational wind farms in Canada with a capacity of at least 100 MW. The name of the wind farm is the name used by the energy company when referring to the farm. The Centennial Wind Power Facility in Saskatchewan was the first wind farm in Canada to have a capacity of at least 100 MW upon completion in 2006. Since then numerous other wind farms have surpassed the 100 MW threshold, most often through the expansion of existing wind farms.
