Melaky Region
Melaky is a region in northwestern Madagascar. It borders Boeny Region in northeast, Betsiboka in east, Bongolava in southeast and Menabe in south. The capital of the region is Maintirano. The population was estimated to be 309,805 in 2018 within the area of . Melaky has the smallest population and the smallest population density of all Malagasy regions. Maintirano
Maintirano is a coastal city, commune urbaine (urban municipality), ( mg, kaominina) and Catholic bishopric in western Madagascar approximately 325 kilometres west of the capital Antananarivo. It belongs to the district of Maintirano, which is a part of Melaky Region – and is capital of both. The population of the commune was estimated to be approximately 25,788 in 2018. The city is inhabited mainly by the Sakalava tribe. Economy and infrastructure The climate is fairly hot and access to the region is difficult due to lack of roads and few commercial flights. Maintirano is served by Maintirano Airport and a local maritime harbour. The town has a permanent court and hospital. The majority 55% of the population works in fishing. 34% are farmers. Mahajanga Province
Mahajanga was a former province of Madagascar that had an area of 150,023 km². It had a population of 1,896,000 (2004). Its capital was Mahajanga, the second largest city in Madagascar. Except for Fianarantsoa, Mahajanga Province bordered all of the country's other provinces–Antsiranana in the north, Toamasina in the east, Antananarivo in the southeast and Toliara in the southwest. Sea cucumbers were an important commercial product produced in the province. In 1999, cholera epidemic broke out in the province. It infected 380 people and claimed 26 lives. The epidemic spread towards the southern Antananarivo and Toliara provinces. The province was hit by Cyclone Kamisy in June 1984. Ambohijanahary Reserve
Ambohijanahary Special Reserve is a wildlife reserve in the regions of Menabe and Melaky in Madagascar. The reserve was created in 1958 to protect the sclerophyllous forest between Tsiroanomandidy and Maintirano, as well as protecting the many endemic species of plants and animals. Geography The reserve is on a plateau on the western side of the Bongolava mountain range and near the road from Tsiroanomandidy to Maintirano. Due to the topography and altitude, which ranges from to , there are several habitats within the reserve including sclerophyllous forest. There are extreme changes in the weather during the year with a hot wet season and a long dry season, when most of the streams and rivers run dry. Tsingy De Bemaraha National Park
The Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park is a national park located in Melaky Region, northwest Madagascar. The national park centers on two geological formations: the ''Great Tsingy'' and the ''Little Tsingy''. Together with the adjacent Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve, the National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is crossed by the Manambolo River. Bemarivo Reserve
Bemarivo Reserve is a wildlife reserve in the north-west of Madagascar. It was created in 1956 and covers an area of . The reserve is known for its fauna especially endemic birds. Geography The reserve is located on a coastal plateau in the region of Melaky, about from the town and commune of Besalampy, and from the Mozambique Channel coast. Maningoza Reserve
Maningoza Special Reserve is a wildlife reserve in Madagascar. It was created in 1956 to protect the many endemic plants and animals, and it also contains some of the last remaining areas of dry deciduous forest on the island. Geography The Maningoza Special Reserve was established in 1956 and is in the Melaky Region of Madagascar. The reserve is to the east of Antsalova and the nearest hotel accommodation is in Besalampy.
