Mej Didi (2003 Film)
''Mej Didi'' is a 2003 Bengali film directed by Shantimoy Bandyopadhyay and produced by Samrat Banerjee. The film is based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's short story of the same name. The screenplay and dialogue of the film was written by Shaktipada Rajguru. The film endorses altruism. The plot is set in the early twentieth century. It revolves around an orphan teenager who is oppressed by his unkind stepsister and a woman who shelters him. It stars Debashree Roy in the title role. The film failed to earn critical favour. Rajguru was criticised for his weak screenplay. The portrayal of Bipin Chatujje was critically panned. While Hemangini is the face of altruism in the original story, the film depicts both Hemangini and her husband Bipin to be altruistic. Debashree Roy (born 8 August 1962), also known as Debasree Roy, is an Indian actress, dancer, choreographer, politician and animal rights activist. As an actress, she is known for her work in Hindi and Bengali cinema. She has been cited as the reigning queen of Bengali commercial cinema. She acted in more than a hundred films and won over forty awards, including a National Award, three BFJA Awards, five Kalakar Awards and an Anandalok Award. Chinmoy Roy
Chinmoy Roy (1940–2019) was an Indian Bengali male actor. He was famous for his comic roles in Bengali movies, though his versatility has allowed him to play a variety of roles. Though he was known for portraying various character roles, Roy was equally at ease in portraying the famous fictional character Tenida on screen. He held his own among prominent performers like Soumitra Chatterjee, Robi Ghose and Tarun Kumar in the comedies ''Basanto Bilap'', ''Dhonni Meye'', and ''Nanigopaler Biye''. He was also seen in a small role in Satyajit Ray's '' Goopy Gyne o Bagha Byne'', in which he portrayed a spy working for the Minister of Halla. Roy had to contend with chronic health problems. Ramaprasad Banik (রমাপ্রসাদ বনিক) (1954–2010) was a Bengali theatre actor, director and playwright. He also worked in films and televisions. He started his career at a very early age with ''Putul khela'', which was an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House. This play was directed by Sombhu Mitra. Banik was called protégé of the Sombhu Mitra. Banik wrote and acted in many plays for Bohurupee. In 1981 he left ''Bohurupee'' he created his own theatre group ''Chena Mukh''. Manoj Mitra (born 22 December 1938) is an Indian theatre, film and television actor, director and playwright. Early life Mitra was born on 22 December 1938 in Dhulihar village of Satkhira, Khulna, Bangladesh. Initially he used to study at home because his father Ashok Kumar Mitra, who had a transferable job. Mitra was attracted to the Jatras and plays that used to be held in their courtyard during the Durga Pujas but was forbidden by senior family members to participate in any way. His school life began after the Partition at a school (Dandirhat N.K.U.S. Niketan) near Basirhaat. Later he joined the Scottish Church College with honours in philosophy and graduated in 1958. He used to write short stories and many of them appeared in various magazines. It was at Scottish Church that he got initiated to theatre. Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, alternatively spelt as Sarat Chandra Chatterjee ( bn, শরৎচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়; 15 September 1876 or ৩১ শে ভাদ্র ১২৮৩ বঙ্গাব্দ – 16 January 1938), was a Bengali novelist and short story writer of the early 20th century. Shaktipada Rajguru ( bn, শক্তিপদ রাজগুরু) (1 February 1922 – 12 June 2014) was an Indian Bengali writer. Several of his novels have been adapted for the screen including the Ritwik Ghatak-directed '' Meghe Dhaka Tara'' and the Shakti Samanta-directed '' Amanush''. His stories have been translated into Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam. Personal life Shaktipada Rajguru was born on 1 February 1922 in Gopebandi, Bankura District, in what is now West Bengal, India. His early schooling was at Pachthopi Trailakyanath Institutional School in Murshidabad. He received his bachelor's degree from Surendranath College under the University of Calcutta.
