Meinhard Nehmer
Meinhard Nehmer (born 13 January 1941 in Bobolin, Police County, Boblin near Police, West Pomeranian Voivodeship, Pölitz, Pomerania) is a former East Germany, East German bobsledder who competed from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s. Competing in two Winter Olympics, he won four medals with three golds (Two-man: 1976 Winter Olympics, 1976, Four-man: 1976, 1980 Winter Olympics, 1980) and one bronze (Two-man: 1980). Nehmer also carried the East German flag during the opening ceremonies of the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck. He also won four medals at the FIBT World Championships with one gold (Four-man: FIBT World Championships 1977, 1977), two silvers (Two-man: FIBT World Championships 1978, 1978, Four-man: FIBT World Championships 1979, 1979), and one bronze (Four-man: 1978). Bobsleigh or bobsled is a team winter sport that involves making timed runs down narrow, twisting, banked, iced tracks in a gravity-powered sleigh. Brian Shimer
Brian Shimer (born April 20, 1962) is an American bobsledder who competed from 1985 to 2002. Competing in five Winter Olympics, he won the bronze medal in the four-man event at Salt Lake City in 2002. Shimer also won three bronze medals at the FIBT World Championships with one in the two-man event (1997) and two in the four-man event (1993, 1997). He won the 1992–3 Bobsleigh World Cup championships both in the four-man and the combined men's events. Shimer retired after the 2002 Winter Olympics and became head coach of the US men's bobsleigh team. FIBT World Championships 1993
The FIBT World Championships 1993 took place in Igls, Austria (Bobsleigh) and La Plagne, France ( Skeleton). This was Igls's fourth time hosting the championships, doing so previously in 1935 (Two-man) and 1963, and 1991 (Skeleton). Meanwhile, La Plagne was hosting its first championship event. Selection issue Igls was not the first choice for the bobsleigh part of the championships. In 1989, Cervinia, Italy was chosen over Winterberg, Germany (then in West Germany), but Cervinia later withdrew and Igls was awarded as a substitute. Horst Hörnlein
Horst Hörnlein (also known as Horst Hömlein, born 31 May 1945 in Möhrenbach) is a former East German luger and bobsleigh coach who competed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He and Reinhard Bredow won the gold medal in the men's doubles event (shared with the Italians Paul Hildgartner and Walter Plaikner) at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo. Hörnlein also won five medals in the men's doubles event at the FIL World Luge Championships with one gold (1973), one silver (1969), and three bronzes (1965, 1970, 1971). He won four medals at the FIL European Luge Championships with three golds (Men's singles: 1971, Men's doubles: 1970, 1972) and one bronze (Men's singles: 1970).
