''Measuring the Mind: Conceptual Issues in Contemporary Psychometrics'' is a book by Dutch academic Denny Borsboom, Assistant Professor of Psychological Methods at the University of Amsterdam, at time of publication. The book discusses the extent to which psychology can measure mental attributes such as intelligence and examines the philosophy of science, philosophical issues that arise from such attempts. The book examines three major models within psychometrics; classical test theory/true scores, latent variables/item response theory and Measurement#Representational theory, representational measurement theory. Denny Borsboom
Denny Borsboom (born November 9, 1973) is a Dutch psychologist and psychometrician. He has been a professor of psychology at the University of Amsterdam since 2013. His work has included applying network theory to the study of mental disorders and their symptoms. In 2018 he presented the Paul B. Validity (statistics)
Validity is the main extent to which a concept, conclusion or measurement is well-founded and likely corresponds accurately to the real world. The word "valid" is derived from the Latin validus, meaning strong. The validity of a measurement tool (for example, a test in education) is the degree to which the tool measures what it claims to measure. Validity is based on the strength of a collection of different types of evidence (e.g. face validity, construct validity, etc.) described in greater detail below. In psychometrics, validity has a particular application known as test validity: "the degree to which evidence and theory support the interpretations of test scores" ("as entailed by proposed uses of tests"). Psychological Medicine
''Psychological Medicine'' is a peer-reviewed medical journal in the field of psychiatry and related aspects of psychology and basic sciences. According to the ''Journal Citation Reports'', the journal has a 2020 impact factor of 7.723. History The journal was established in 1969 by Michael Shepherd, who remained its editor until 1993. Homomorphic
In algebra, a homomorphism is a structure-preserving map between two algebraic structures of the same type (such as two groups, two rings, or two vector spaces). The word ''homomorphism'' comes from the Ancient Greek language: () meaning "same" and () meaning "form" or "shape". Additive Conjoint Measurement
The theory of conjoint measurement (also known as conjoint measurement or additive conjoint measurement) is a general, formal theory of continuous quantity. It was independently discovered by the French economist Gérard Debreu (1960) and by the American mathematical psychologist R. Duncan Luce and statistician John Tukey . The theory concerns the situation where at least two natural attributes, ''A'' and ''X'', non-interactively relate to a third attribute, ''P''. It is not required that ''A'', ''X'' or ''P'' are known to be quantities. Via specific relations between the levels of ''P'', it can be established that ''P'', ''A'' and ''X'' are continuous quantities. Philosophical realism is usually not treated as a position of its own but as a stance towards other subject matters. Social Constructivism
Social constructivism is a sociological theory of knowledge according to which human development is socially situated and knowledge is constructed through interaction with others. Like social constructionism, social constructivism states that people work together to construct artifacts. While social constructionism focuses on the artifacts that are created through the social interactions of a group, social constructivism focuses on an individual's learning that takes place because of his or her interactions in a group. Instrumentalism
In philosophy of science and in epistemology, instrumentalism is a methodological view that ideas are useful instruments, and that the worth of an idea is based on how effective it is in explaining and predicting phenomena. According to instrumentalists, a successful scientific theory reveals nothing known either true or false about nature's unobservable objects, properties or processes.
